I might be way off here, but why would someone pre order a bike, when you dont know what new bells and whistles, or colors are going to be? Am I missing something?

No you're not. You'd be insane to order something for that much money and not know what the hell it looks like.

And yet there's probably hundreds of people who have already done it. Hell there's probably some on this board who already plunked down some money for one.

Insanity is a widespread pandemic in this country these days.

But forums are full of people that will only ride a black bike and people that lament that Harley never changes - it's stuck in the 50's.
So if you're currently riding a twin cam and you want a new bike and your style is "Black Street Glide/Road Glide/Road King" AND you watched your local dealer struggle with inventory all of 2021 (pro tip, supply chain isn't going to be radically better for 2022) - you place your order now. Odds are VERY good that the black bike you order will show up the way you expect it to.
From what I gather, you are reserving, not PRE-ORDERING, though I didn't go past the basic selection, hopefully there is more information on the motorcycles as you go more into the process. It states the dealer will contact you to continue the reservation, so apparently, you can discuss options then.
Like stated already, if you want a 2022, probably going to be the only way to get one. Like anything else, if it comes in and you don't like it, just say NO and they will sell it to the next sucker customer.

Because it's the same damn bike every year. No one notices the small changes that they make.

It's not preordering a bike. All it's doing is sending a dealer your contact info. Preorder means you can actually pick what it is you want? Where are the new models model changes and all the details listed?
