it's a great wash to use on engines because it's all about leaving nothing behind....it does a great job of breaking down grime, wax, and such on vehicles....this and a thorough rinse with water and then I dry with a blower
I was at a dealer during a trip once and a newer street glide engine was spread out all over a table. Asked the tech wtf and he said the owner used some spray on caustic stuff to brighten things up and stripped all the black away. Just a caution to stick to motorcycle products

I dunno, when I had the barrels and heads off my EVO I cleaned them in Trisodium phosphate (TSP) before I re sprayed them with the HD Wrinkle Black. Then baked them under heat lamps overnight. That was in 1998 (?) and they still look good. I used a Dremel with a medium sanding paper wheel on the edges BTW.
I was taught to use the least abrasive cleaning pad and work your way up to stronger material until you find what works. Scotch Brite is what I would start with, then you have to find what will preserve the shine. Another suggestion from your close-up picture, replace the shift rod connections with Heim joints, you'll thank me later.
As far as Scotch Brite goes, the white ones are the most gentle. I use it for cleaning crankshaft snouts when replacing front main shaft seals on tractors and other equipment. The green or red is a bit more coarse and would likely take a little luster off. The white should just polish it more.

I melted a VW motor with oven cleaner.
