Default Riding weather temp swings-conditions

Today we started in 91-degree temps in Syracuse. Headed north to Tug Hill. 70-degrees leaving Barnes Corners, NY with temps climbing as we turned south. A nice 21-degree swing.

So I thought I’d start a weather-temp thread.

Years ago I went from 33-drizzling degrees in the ‘Cuse, to 85 in Washington in the same day. A 52-degree swing on Memorial Day weekend
I also rode near a small tornado near Oneonta. I shoulda pulled over. Branches flying, temps dropping and rain so hard I had my legs out as out riggers. Very stooooopid.

Last week I went from 104 when I left Tulsa Monday afternoon, to 68 and light rain the next morning in Kansas.

The biggest temp swing was a few years ago. It was 23 degrees when I left Albuquerque, NM and low 80s by the afternoon in Moab, UT.

Looks like you have “never get out of saddle until destination” syndrome

The biggest temp swing I've experienced in one day was in 2011. When I went thru West Texas it was 115°. Several hours later in the mountains climbing toward Red River N.M. it was 48° and misting rain.

Wow, I usually do not encounter those conditions! We just do not have that kinda time off to go riding that much to end up in the desert or mountains - perhaps both in one day. I wish I did, and definitely someday after retirement. Everyone says that right? But our time off usually takes us to a warm beach destinations in the middle of January or February.

That said, I do analyze my route on our two 100 mile trips each year. What is the temperature leaving? What is the temperature halfway? What is the temperature and time upon arrival and for each day at my destination? Any rain? Same for the return. The usual searches.

My guiding factor was that I got caught one year on a 4 hour return trip. First year riding. Old leather jacket so not insulated very well. No gator. The other 3 days were hot but the return was cold and the only clean shirt I had was lightweight. I didn't even take a sweatshirt as an extra layer - just in case. I was cold but not cold enough to dig into my bag for extra shirts to layer - dirty or not. I was stupid but I swore I'd never again be in that situation, unprepared.

Pikes Peak two summers ago, it was muggy & mid 90's at the gate at the bottom... and the guy at the gate said "let me check and see if its snowing"... I thought he was joking. Half way up I pulled over to leather up. At the top it looked like, and felt like, it could snow... although it was right at 40, overcast, windy and spitting. That was the biggest temperature change I've experienced in 20 miles good times!

Pulled into Duluth, MN as a storm front was moving in. It must have dropped 30 degrees.
Going over a bridge at night, you can feel it cool off too.
Beartooth pass will change temps from start to finish also. I think it was the only time I wore my jacket during the whole two weeks I was on the road.

If you are talking temp swings while traveling, than 20-30 certainly is nothing at all, between lattitude and elevations. I was just talking local temps, especially in the fall, 20-30 is not that unusaual. Midwest, mornings are often cool. It is very rare I would not wear a jacket in the morning.

One of the coldest rides I had out west was Cheif Josef highway.
