Got the video to go.
Sounds like starter to me staying engaged. When you shut off the bike you hear what sounds to me like starter spinning down, 🤔
The answers are in this thread
I wouldn't be surprised your jack shaft shows wear. Maybe gear on clutch too. Not sure if you need to pull clutch to see it. Left hand thread on clutch if you do. Right hand on front comp nut.
Primary plug often has metal on it. Don't freek right away.
One thoery is start is engaged and hitting backside of gear while running.
Probably not good for starter. I'd consider replacing if you see damage. at least starter clutch. But maybe whole thing is probably best
Plus once you have starter off on that year, might as well replace, if damaged.
Thanks guys for the help. It appears the start switch buttons on the handlebars had went bad causing the starter to engage at times. I haven't had anymore weird noises since having that replaced.

Did you open primary to look for damage? I'd also be concerned you burned up starter
A shop did the work on it, but I don't think he looked at the primary. If the starter was hanging up and engaging which I believe is what was causing the noise. Would that possibly damage something in the primary? I could go ahead and change the fluid, if i need to.
Since you are supposed to limit cranking on a starter to seconds, and yours went for miles, I dunno.
My guess, with zero way of knowing,is Jack shaft sat and spun against starting gear on clutch. Maybe just scored it. Obviously wasn't engaged.
No load maybe. Maybe just spinning. I have to think shortened life of starter or starter clutch.
Changing a starter on 5speed. is more labor. I would have opened up to inspect. Probably replaced starter clutch or more.
All depends on how much you want to spend and how much you ridem
Hopefully you listen to kick back and grinding, if it does. Hopefully gives warning before it dies wrong spot.
