On my way home today on my 01 road king, and I start hearing this strange rattling noise it would do it even when the bike was stopped with me holding the clutch in 1st gear.
Pulled over and put it in neutral and then rode home, now it's not making that noise.
Now the bike will start itself as soon as I turn the ignition on the dash and the run button is on, it will start without hitting the start switch on the handlebar.
I smell something hot that I haven't noticed before.
Have you recently changed or done anything to it?
just throwing a stone out there but I would start with checking the push to start switch. ? Maybe went bad engaged starter (your noise you heard) now when ignition is turned on switch stuck or bad closed its like you are pushing it 🤔 causing it to engage the starter
be the first thing I'd check

Nah I haven't changed anything recently. The noise was a lot like that bad stator video I posted.
But now when I start the bike its not making that noise, can the stator noise come and go?
Thanks
I don't think a stator noise would come and go unless the compensator bolt is loose letting the rotor hit it? Or is Broke
may be worth looking into, but I don't believe that would be the issue for starting on its own with just ignition switch turned to on
I would disconnect the battery when parked. Probably being over cautious.
I was going to tensioners causing noise, maybe primary bearing. I doubt anything wrong with stator. But because it starts on own, I would ignore everything but starting circuit for now.
Spray electrical cleaner in starter switch? If it fixes it, I might get new switch anyways. Never heard of it, but is it possible the starter was engaging when running making noise?
The noise sounded like it was coming from the primary case area, but I could be wrong. I'm thinking I should haul it to the shop, rather than ride it. Its not making the noise now, but I might could damage something.
