Never saw anyone in Daytona/Ormond Beach area that was against the rallies. Never saw a protest, sign, or even an old blue hair bitching about it. It is made up internet gossip. First and foremost, they need the tourism, not too many other weeks bring in several hundred thousand people to support their economy. Second very little of the rally is on the ocean besides they seldom visited boardwalk. And third, even if the Mayor "canceled" the rally, whatever that means, all of the bars and restaurants would still be open catering to the bikers. The rally does not need the City of... to exist. It needs good weather and cold beer.
Well, the current Kittle's Locksmith shop in South Daytona used to be a bike shop that had street vendors and the like during the events. The city but a stop to the tent vendors and put the bike shop out of business - unemploying the workers there. The city of Daytona raised the rent so high at Beach Street Park that Bruce Rossmeyer bought a run down old motel on Route 1 in Ormand and made what is not destination Daytona; no more vendors at Beach Street Park. The gray haired residents do bitch and do vote ... the limp wristed elected officials cow-tow. There will always be a Bike Week and a Biketoberfest but we are in the cross hairs. Think about it, the City of Daytona will not let let the vendors set up on Main Street any earlier than Thursday ... why? They don't want more than four (3.5) days of us.
Bike Week is not just about Main Street, which the City has found out. Rossmeyer was a genius for moving out of town, following the lead from the Iron horse and others. Bike Week is very spread out with lots and lots of businesses happy to welcome the money. Venture past Main Street and see the real Florida. Yes Daytona can twist up the vendors and local shops if they want, all if does is send the money to the next town. Ride up to Flagler or St. Augustine, people are happy to see you.
With the tragedy in Daytona, I wonder what the anti biker rally folks are saying today?
other than children, and other bikers....most folks really don't give a **** about our motorcycles
the anti bike people are not so obsessed with bikers that in lieu of this tragedy, they look at the horror and say "the humanity....this is the end....the motorcycles need to go!!"

I can't work up any sympathy for them. I was born and raised in Florida and people have been warned REPEATEDLY not to build on the coast. They do it anyway and now they're paying the price, and the rest of us are also paying astronomically high property insurance because of these idiots. We may not even be able to GET insurance now.
Another thing they do is prevent other people from accessing the beach. They build their little slice of paradise and the hell with everybody else. I've seen it dozens and dozens of times.
Nope, no sympathy at all. In fact, I like seeing them get their comeuppance.
THIS, Thank you.
I'm another Florida native that resents having to pay higher insurance rates statewide because people makes the stupid decision to build on the beach. It's not a "tragedy" when you make an ignorant choice and Mother Nature slaps you silly. You gambled...you LOST. Don't come to me to make you whole again.
Anyone who has studied the natural dynamics of Florida's beaches ( I have..) will tell you that there should be NO permanent construction allowed East of A1A....PERIOD....NONE.
I don't like to see anyone suffer but as I said...when it's due to their own foolish choice...I'm not sympathetic.
Well, we got 2 different stories going on here! As someone who lived and rode during the 70’s and 80’s in central Florida when bike weeks were off the hook, the city politicians tried to abolish bike week then and came close to doing it. Only reason it still is going on is because of Bill France and the local chamber of commerce pressuring the city to not do it. Back then the little town of 50,000 people would explode to 550,000 for a week and they didn’t know how to handle it.
as far as building on the ocean, it’s going to be way bigger problem in the next 25 years and the reality is starting to sink in for coastal communities all over the eastern seaboard. Florida is expected to see sea levels rise by 18” plus by 2050 according to NASA and high tide levels approx 4 feet above where they currently are. Think about that for a second.
THIS, Thank you.

if they are on the beach they are paying their fair share
Its the golden rule they have the gold they make the rules
When homes are built in areas where there's a potential for disaster, you get what you get. Back in the day, the shorelines and other areas susceptible to hurricanes, tornadoes and alike were not overly populated. Over the years the density increased, thus, when a hurricane rolls in, it's a much worse scenario than 100 years ago. I'm a Florida native and worked for an insurance company for 40 years. You have the right to complain about your homeowner rates, but consider that the insurance companies want to make money and provide for your piece of mind. I remember when Ralph Nader jumped on my former employer concerning the millions of dollars they had in reserve. He believed the policyholders should be reimbursed or have their premiums reduced. And then Hurricane Andrew blasted South Florida... My company had the money to take care of ALL their policyholders. Never heard a word from Nader again.
