Default Harley Ride Planner help

Hello all, I hope that someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I went on a ride yesterday using the planner to get from my house to a dealership in Tyler, Tx. It sure seems like I did everything right in the planner but along the route the nav kept telling me to make a u-turn about every 3-4 minutes. Very strange. I ultimately canceled the nav directions along the way because it was getting really annoying. I must be missing something obvious. I checked the route on my laptop today and it all seems good. ? Thanks for your help in advance. Steve

You're probably doing nothing wrong. The factory nav system is just awful. I tried to use it and it sucked so bad I gave up on it.

There’s a recent thread here that someone posted with the correct instructions on how to bend that beast to your will, otherwise it takes you the way IT wants to go.

I’ll see if i can find it.

Sometimes it gets hung up on the first waypoint, ie the starting point, and if you can delete that one item, it will catch up and get you on your way. I don't use HD Ride planner, found it too hard to use, so switch to MyRouteAdpp.com and it is much easier in my opinion,

Post #18 in this recent thread is the key to how I finally got it to work where I can plot a route, and have it actually load to the bike and take me the way I planned to go. My post #22 will help you also.

Thank you for the pointers. I discovered the first time I used it a couple of months ago how important it is to really zoom into the map when using it. When I got home from my ride I looked at the ride again on the laptop while zoomed in really close and I don't see any deviations from what I wanted it to do. It all looks good. Strange. This ride also only had one starting point and one destination with one way point to stop for lunch sixty miles into the ride. I didn't even make it five miles from home before it started telling me to make a u turn. I'm baffled. I'll take a look at the map again. There's got to be something I'm missing.

I feel your pain. Here's how I got around the U-turn issue as well as the issue with waypoint #1 or more. What I have found first of all is to use a generous-almost ridiculous-amount of waypoints. That prevents the nav system from trying to use its' own preferred routes, and forces it to use your preplanned route. Secondly, when you drop in a waypoint, greatly expand the map to make certain that the waypoint is EXACTLY in your lane of the road or interstate. If the waypoint is not exactly in your lane, the nav system doesn't think that you've arrived at it and keeps trying to make you go back to it. Drop a waypoint where you want it, then expand the map, and often you'll be surprised where the waypoint is vs where your thought it was!
EXMOTOTIM has a great YouTube series on the H-D Ride Planner....four or more videos (I think). Here's the first:
. These REALLY helped me to the point that I can actually use the H-D Nav system. Sadly, although it has worked great for me over the past year since learning the "hows" of the H-D planner, I also have Apple Car Play on my bike and can easily use Waize or Google Maps as well.
H-D really screwed up in choosing a stereo company-Harman-Kardon (and not even a top shelf premier stereo company at that!) to build their navigations system and then with the upgrade to Boom! Box GTS, stayed the wrong course never wanting to admit they F*cked-up. GARMIN is THE premier choice of navigations systems and definitely was in 2016, so why in hell did Harley not use them, one can only guess. They already had a business relationship with Garmin (Roadtech Zumo)I guess that what's happens when a shoe salesman runs a motorcycle company(into the ground).

In my personal opinion - the best solution for HD Ride Planner is not to use it. My cursory review/trial of it suggested it's not worth my time. There are much better solutions out there. I don't ride a bagger/touring bike, so Harley's Boom Box GTS or whatever isn't a thing for me. If I did though, I might be looking into CarPlay or Android Auto. If neither CarPlay or Android Auto are an option, I might just use my phone for navigation (which I already do on my Heritage).

For "trip" or route planning I would check out Furkot.com (probably the best/most capable trip/route planner out there). I denote "trip" because there is a difference between "trip" and simple route planning (good trip planners can do both). If you are an iOS type, you're in luck. The interoperability/integration between Furkot and Scenic.app is great. In my opinion, Scenic is probably one of the best - if not the best - navigation apps for smartphones. Bonus, Scenic supports Apple CarPlay. When it comes to Scenic and Android - it's a bummer. However, the good news is that an Android version of Scenic is supposed to be out early next year. Android Auto for Scenic will likely be a bit further away.

For Android users - and the here and now - I might look at MyRoute-app (myrouteapp.com). MRA has both MRA Routeplanner and MRA Navigation. Routeplanner is a decent route planner. Not as good as Furkot, but probably easier to pick up and use. Bonus... Routeplanner not only exports to GPX (and various other formats) it also exports to HD Boom Box. MRA Navigation is also a pretty good nav app for Android. However, it does lack in a couple of key areas/features. Good news though, the developers are currently revamping their Navigation app and will be bringing out what they call "Next". This should address shortcomings of the current version (to include eventually supporting Android Auto). Beta testing for Next is supposed to begin this month.

If one perfers the MRA ecosystem and uses iOS devices, there is a MRA Navigation app for iOS. The current version (and Next) - AFAIK - supports CarPlay.

My 2 cents.

Also check to settings on your bikes Navigation. You might have it set up to "avoid a certain route" or "take the shortest route."

Additionally, as mentioned, delete the first waypoint.
