Default I keep burning cables

Hi Guys

I got 2022 Road King Special. As you probably know this bike doesn't have USB port so I connected my iPhone charging cable to battery “pig tail” to allow charging.

Well every 2-3K miles I need to replace my cable as something is happening to it and it will simply stop working. I am on my 3rd cable over last 9k miles. I woudnt mind keep replacing it but routing this sucker under the tank is PITA. Initially I thought it was the phone but this is second phone and it is not phone issue when testing with cable at home.

Seems like I am burning these cables or something as it always have some dark burn sign initially when I notice the issue that I clean with my tingers but cable never will work like before. Sometimes it would charge for a moment and then just die.

I am buying quality cables too like Anker not some cheap junk.

Any ideas? I am thinking maybe voltage going to battery sometimes spike at high speed and this burns cable since my pig tail plug is connected to battery terminal directly. Maybe having USB cable with some kind of fuse will help?

Here is close up of the plug that died today

Not sure what your "pig tail" is? If it's a USB charger hooked up to the battery and then your USB cable, that should be fine. But, from your description you have your USB cable directly attached to the battery. Not good.

It is cable connected to battery with pig tail connection and then pig tail to USB reduction and USB phone charging cable connected to USB port

Amazing phone port still works after that. Think I would replace the USB plug cable and the USB port cable. Is it the type you plug into a power port in a car?

not sure if youre just charging the phone for charging purposes, or your charging it while using it for Navigation, music, or watching gay midget **** while your riding......

If your just charging, I throw one of these in the saddlegbag to charge it up between fuel stops or stopping for a beer:

Amazon Amazon

If you're going to mount something to the bars and charge, I've gone with a great setup from Quad lock that works great. Charges without a hitch....easy on, easy off.....no, I wasn't paid for these endorsements.

You can PM me if you want pics and details of the quad lock setup......fairly low profile and easy to install

You haven't eliminated the phone, itself. Your phone charge port may need to be addressed. Make sure it is clean from pocket lint so the plug fits snug and deep. You might have arcing across your terminals making burn marks because you don't have a tight fit especially from vibration from the bike.

I am reluctant to even charge on a bike from battery pack in tourpak, worried the port will wobble out from vibration. Maybe I worry to much. maybe 100 guys will say we do it all the time.

I worry the port of the phone will get damaged, and then phone is useless, especially if it doesn't have wireless charging and you can't get data off it. Lots of people probably do it, and I worry to much.

The cables on my zumo gps lock in

What is this “USB reduction”? Does it take 12VDC and reduce it to the correct DC voltage your phone needs to charge?

.

The cable that plugs into your phone is expecting 5V and has protection built into it.

Why do I get the feeling you may be pumping 12V into that cable...

rather than keep replacing cables, i would look into replacing your setup. get a good quality charging port and wire it in up under your headlight nacelle. you could even go 'oem' and look up the parts for the softails and see about adapting that.

but it definitely sounds like the setup you have is causing you issues and at $20+ a pop for good cables, i would try something different.
