I have always wanted a sporty for a secont bike, when I tried them, they were always buzzy and vibraty. Then tried an 07, it is so smooth and powerful I bought it that day. Great bike wouldn't hesitate to tour on it.....and great mileage. I think the earlier Sporties are maybe lighter (pre 04) and more suited for racing, but these later ones (rubber mount) are nice comfortable bikes suitable for daily use. Your next decision would be carb(04-06),or fuel injection (07-later), just a personal choice.Another thing, the new ones have a bigger tank. I would think- for a main ride, a newer rubber mount would be good.If itsa second bike, hot rod for ripping around town, maybe an earlier one would be fun, more traditional, raw, unrefined.
What pepesworld said.....I had an '01 with 100hp; tons 'o fun but not the touring mount my FXDXT is. Solo on a newer rubber-mount would be great I'm sure.....
As pointed out already - Tranny trapdoor gone meaning split the cases for a tranny repair. Lifter blocks gone meaning expensive repairs instead of simply replacing blocks. Probably some other manufacturing shortcuts, also.
I've got an '07 Nightster. Love it for what it is. But I ain't under any illusions that when something breaks it'll be easily fixable, and of all the HDs I've owned, this one is the closest thing to a throwaway bike.
maybe he said that because of how many aftermarket parts are available for those years. 04'- up rubber mounts haven't been around long I guess for people to figure out everything. Example is I want a springer front end on my scoot but haven't found one that's bolts right on yet, soon though I will have 1 with out having to change my frame
I think the fuel inj.is so much better than sitting around on cold mornings and playing with a choke. And I would never base a buying decision on how hard it is to repair the trans.Keep in mind brand new 883's go for 6595+++
I always admired the sporty but wouldn't allow myself to buy one till they went rubber mount. At that point I couldn't resist any more and I bought an 05 1200 C. I absolutely love the bike. It is the most fun bike I've had in a long time. For one up touring it is great. If you were in to two up I would recommend a Dyna or a Softail.

Thing is some of us tend to keep bikes through several overhaul cycles. My "regular" bike is 20 years old. Last "regular" bike was 18 years old with over 200,000 miles, and the one before that was about 10 years old with over 100,000 miles. If I have to replace the cases because the lifter area is worn out, or pay the equivalent of new cases to simply repair that area, then I'll probably take that into consideration when buying. I got the Nightster for my wife - it was low and it's rubber, two things she wanted. Fuel injection is great until it breaks after the warranty is out. Then it ain't no fun.
We all buy bikes for various reasons; some are incompatible. Many things about the newer bikes (Twinkie & rubber on up) are good things; some are solely for ease and low cost manufacturing. Those things often cause a decreased life span in the mechanical world.
A question like this would have been better off being posted in the Sportster section. Then again, the answers would be a little jadded,.like my anwser to the question. I have an 06, 883L. Have over 12,000 miles on it. Absolutly love it. Have gone near and, far. Versatile, rugged, peppy, stylish. As far as the vibration issue's, they're minimal. Club that I hang around with has started to show an interest in it since it's able to keep up with them on the road trips we take. Could be better in some situations, could be worse in some situations as far as comfort and conviences are concerned.
