Default HD extended warranty a waste??? NOT!!!

Pardon me if this post is a little long. A few months ago there was a discussion on this forum that was started by a very disgruntled HD owner starting with the post that he/she was going to cancel the extended warranty on their bike because it was a waste of money and basicallyworthless. He/she went on to say it was a rip-off and just another way for the MoCo to steal your money. The warranty was cancelled and he/she was waiting for the refund.
I replied to that post with the story of my '03 Heritage breaking down while in Canada on vacation. Thestarter didn't dis-engage, fried itself and burned down the main wiring harness. The bike had 25K miles on it and was just out of factory warranty. Long story short, the total bill for that repair came to $1350.00. My out ofpocket expense was all of $100.00, due to my extended warranty.
Jump ahead to this date. The bike now has 50K miles on it and I took it in for service today. In addition to the service, I requested that the cam chain tensioners be inspected. The bike was running fine with no problems, it was just time to check. Upon inspection it was found that the outer tensioner was about1/2 worn and the inner was more than 3/4 worn. The cam bearings were worn and the oil pump was full of plastic. The bike got new cams, bearings, lifters, tensioners, oil pump, gaskets, and other misc. parts. Total bill for repair was $1200.00. Again, my out of pocket expense was, you guessed it, $100.00. Thank god for the extended warranty!
When I purchased the bike in August of '03 I paid the dealer $1249.00 for the 7yr extended warranty, to date I've had over $2500.00 in repairs done at a cost of $200.00.
So now, someone out there tell me again, how the extended warranty is a rip-off ???
I think not!

On the other hand, I bought an extended warranty and in 50k miles only had an 85 buck fast idle solenoid replaced.

Extended warranty is a gamble, just like most types of insurance etc.....You rolled the dice and got sevens......Personally i have never got an extended warranty on anything in my life that i can remember...Now i will say, that i am an aircraft mechanic, and do just about all of my own wrenching on everything i own.....boat, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, trolling motors, etc etc....And not having an extended warranty, i would of probably noticed the worn out chain tensioners during an earlier inspection, simply because i do not hesitate to pull covers and check things on a very regular period, much more so than a manufactures reccomendations......Especially knowing the PROBLEM areas of interest by educating myself by reading post on this forum, magazines, etc.....Your starter not disengaging is typically because of it not being greased, although not always ! Its something i check perodically on my boat, bike, etc.....If i were not mechanically inclined, nor had the time to attend to my machines.....personally, i would then consider an extended warranty. And it sounds like you are VERY happy you did.....and thats whats important, especially whilst broke down up in canada ! Bet you were grinning knowing it was all gonna be fixed and was covered.....money well spent !

If you total everything up you've actually had $2,550 in repair work done and it cost you $1,449 so you still came out ahead of the game and that's definitely a good thing, but I still would havehung on to the initial $1,249 you laid out during your purchase back in 2003 and taken my chances....

Extended warranty is nothing more than an insurance policy. No different than having personal health insurance. It's health insurance for your bike/car/appliance. There are a lot of people who don't need it, but when you do, your glad you have it. Especially if your repair bill exceedswhat you paid for the insurance. I have purchased extended warranty for car purchases over the past 15 years. Most of my warranty issues were addressed during the manufactures warranty period and only had a couple claims that really didn't get close to what i paid for the policy. With many manufactures extending their bumper to bumper warranty periods, 3 yearsfor some and now lifetime driveline with Chrysler,I would probably not purchase extended warranty today for a car. I won't buy an extended policy for my bike unless it developes gremlins within the two year factory warranty, gambling that it will stay healthy enough to exceed any extended warranty policy.

On the flip side of it all, in th case of the tensioners etc, you paid 100 dollars to have the replacements of the parts put back in the bike, setting up for another failure down the road out of warranty. Without the warranty, you could of upgraded to a different setup, gears or something along with nicer cams. In alot of cases but not all, warranty means putting the same things back in that failed before.
