I think it all depends on your local chapter (if you have one).
Ours is great. Forget motorcycles, it's a well run social club. Has a great executive.. Shakers and movers with good people skills. I've made a lot of new friends being a member. We even have non-Harley riding associate members who have signed up just to be part of it.
We have group rides 3 times a week for anyone who wants to attend.. (Sunday mornings, Tuesday afternoons, and Thursday evenings). We do at least one week-long group tour every year. (We're going to circle the great lakes this coming summer).
Even during our long winters, we still meet.. with regular Sunday morning breakfasts, along with bowling and pool nights. Every year we man a booth and display bikes at the local World of Wheels, and we have an annual Christmas party.
We sponsor a local daycare for low income families. We put on a yearly charity ride and the proceeds go to the daycare.
And with the 10% discount from out sponsoring dealer I've saved $150 so far this year on a set of lowers. So, yes HOG membership is worth it to me.
Did you buy a new or used bike? Since its your first Harley, I suggest you get yourself an Owners manual and an H-D brand service manual. Ride your bike, enjoy it, get to know it. And, maintain it properly.
Your motorcycle insurance covers "roadside assistance". It's too cheap not to add it to your policy. You can always join the HOG membership later...
How about some pictures of you and your Harley? Post um up!

Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid".
When I bought my first new Harley, me and the wife were use to other motorcycle associations. We didn't know if we would trust HOG. We got the free national and decided to get a chapter membership, at least the first year. The people we met were very hospitable and friendly. We kept that membership for several years.
