All I can say to your idea to trailer your bike out is:

What I meant by no riding while there is just that... There. I agree there is great riding around Sturgis. That is why I said don't trailler the bike. In sturgis itself you can't ride. Or at least what I call riding. Way to crowded to call it riding IMO. Spearfish canyon and the black hills are some of the best riding you can have, but not Sturgis during the rally. Idle speed only.

Sturgis - the grand pubaaa - need to convince the wifes family that seeing:

Cazy Horse Memorial and Mt. Rushmore. The ride to Devil's Tower, and the ride through Spearfish Canyon, along with a trip to Custer State Park
Just worked a solid deal to "join" them in a group family vacation - end of xmass gifts for everyone cept kids - our own excluded - (large extended family - gets expensive to the tune of several thousand dallars)- save your pennies and spend it on a "family" vacation - still get together - enjoy but my wide a$$ smile will be thinkin of all those wonderfull miles I get to CRUSE CRUSE CRUSE - yehaawa

Year 1 - my daughter - 2 - my son - 3 send kids with realtives & bring wife - "experimental year" - go alone - will let all involved that I may need "many years training" - to institute year 1

We stayed at Tilford Gulch campground. $15/person per night, and a really nice facility about 10 miles south of Sturgis. They have showers, an outdoor bar and restaurant and were really nice folks. We shipped our camping gear there via UPS, stayed a week, then boxed it back up and shipped it home. We stayed in motels on the way up and back, so you have to plan ahead. Some folks rode and brought a support vehicle and trailer to carry all their gear. The trailer was also there if they had a breakdown along the way.
Prepare for any kind of weather, wet or dry, between 50 and 100 degrees. Leave the kids at home! Sturgis is rated "R", for mature audiences, and in some places, it's rated "X". One day in town is about all you need to see all the stuff for sale. Several days are needed to see all the beautiful riding country in the Black Hills, and even that was not enough for us to see everything. Don't be in a hurry to get anywhere fast, you won't. Just kick back and cruise, and enjoy the ride. Get one of those spring loaded hand excercise devices, and prepare your clutch hand. It's gonna get a serious workout. Just my .02

Sturgis for me will be in 2007. I have always told myself I would go before I die just to experiance it. Now that I Bought a Harley this is even more empounded in my head. I will pass on 2006 and become very familier with riding again as well as getting to know the R.G. intimately over the next year before I make the journey north. I plan on seeing maybe a total of 24 hours at the rally and then like most everyone says, be out riding the country side that is so awsome up there.

How about planning a 2007 gathering of us here at HDForums up there??? Just a thought, and one Im sure might have been tossed around in the past.

I made it to Sturgis last year for the first time. What a hoot. Even though I went by myself I met a group of guys at the campground (Glenco) that made the trip memorable. Rode twelve hundred miles out there, slept on the ground in a tent for five days and rode between 200 and 300 miles every day I was there. Would I do it again? In a heart beat!

Next year my wife will be going. "Roughing" it is not in the cards. She is getting her MC license in the spring, we will pull a camper with my pickup and share the ride out and back. The ride there is just as much of the trip as everything else. Yes I could put the bike in the back of the truck, but it's a Harley not a German Shepherd so that just wouldn't be right!

I have to admit, having a bed and airconditioning is a more appealing thing to look forward to than the tent.

O.k....I am going to admit this here - I am just not a camping type of person. Raised a citygirl, was camping once in Cape Code in 1973. Never had an opportunity since to go camping and don't think a ride to Sturgis from Washington State is the time to start camping. So, to all those who have been to Sturgis - suggestions for places to stay that are not campgrounds would be appreciated. And don't get me wrong - doing need a fancydancy place to stay - my needs are simple - but I do need a bed to sleep on instead of the ground and a hot shower.

Thinking I had better start making reservations for 07!

I'll post closer to the time, but if I can get away, I will be looking for some people to team up with on the ride. I live in central IL and it would be nice not to have to go it alone all of the way. The wife won't ride. Art
