Default 2006 Sturgis

So there is a group of us thinking about going to Sturgis next year. We thought about renting a toy-hauler and going out, then thought about a motel, then a campground, cabin, renting a house, etc… What have you done that you liked or didn’t like? Where did you stay, or where do you think the best place to stay is. I found a house to rent for the entire rally for $10,000 it can hold up to 12 people though. I think I will pass. This will be our fist trip so we want to make the best of it. Any ideas would be great. I know it is a bit early but we want to get started with reservations and such. Thanks for any help.

Ride. Part of the Sturgis thing is the going & returning. Camping? I just found a gravel road, went down it a mile or so, and threw the bag down. Buffalo Chip is the wild campground. There are others that will be quiet enough you can actually grab a few winks.

The past few years we've stayed at the Holy Smoke Resort in Keystone SD. We rented a cabin the past few years. It's in a great location and makes riding to everything fairly easy. I think Skip is right... the best part is to just ride. Don't get caught up in all the "tourist trap" type of stuff that goes on for Bike Week. Just get out there and ride!

I have been to Sturgis a couple of times. I just gave a guy $25 per nght to set up a tent in his yard. There were about 10 tents and we were able to use his shower as well. I stayed for three nights. Other trip freinds had a house rented and I stayed two nights in their yard as the rooms were full up with paying partners. If you are going to trailer your bike, you can just as well drive your car IMO. There is not much riding while you are there, it is the trip there and back that makes the trip memorable as mentioned in the earlier posts. Trailering your bike to Sturgis is like bringing sand to the beach. Ride it!

As far as I'm concerned, the trip to Sturgis is a lot of what Sturgis is all about. It is the middle of summer, so there are no real weather issues other than a little rain. I think that riding is the only way to go.

As far as places to stay, there is Glencoe Campground, and Buffalo Chip Campground if you are interested in the wilder side of the action. If not, there are numerous other campgrounds that offer almost any thing you could ask for. Showers, food courts, etc. You might get lucky and find a motel room somewhere, but that's doubtful. I have stayed at Glenco, Chris' Campground in Spearfish, and the KOA in Spearfish.

Someone said there was not much riding to do after you get there. I disagree with that completely. There is the Needles Highway, the trips to Cazy Horse Memorial and Mt. Rushmore. The ride to Devil's Tower, and the ride through Spearfish Canyon, along with a trip to Custer State Park. There is also the trip out to the Badlands National Park just East of Rapid City.

Our Sturgis trips usually consist of a day in Sturgis and Rapid City, with the rest of the time spent riding the countryside.

Regards,

Bill

I'm with you Bill. Some of the best riding in the States is within 100 miles of Sturgis. Stay a few days, and then ride the area surrounding.

my neighbor who lives in the house in front of me has been to Sturgis at least 7 times. Last year he couldn't go because he was battling cancer. What he has told me is and what I have hear from others is - if you don't camp (tent and stuff), then the accommodations that are near Sturgis are like sold out through 2007 already. You have to go out by about 100-150 miles to get a hotel/motel.

And for me - if I can't ride there, I ain't going. I see no point in trailering her in 25 miles from Sturgis only to get on her and ride her in like I have been riding for the last 1,200 miles. That just isn't right to me. Might be to others - so they can arrive all fresh and ready to go, but for me - getting there is part of the experience.

I am hoping that I can get to go in 2007....2006 is almost here and I can't figure out what to do with the household of animals...and i haven't made any reservations and such.

I agree with the others that the trip there and back is almost the best part of a great week. Although we arrived in Sturgis 3 days prior to the "official" start of bike week, due to work comittments , this was my first trip on a new Electra Glide Classic and also the first two up ride for my wife and I. Once she relaxed and realized we were not going to crash or run off the road, we had a great ride, incredible scenery and good roads for the 700 mile trip to Sturgis. Since we were early, we were able to get the last room availiable at a local hotel. After spending two days in Sturgis, we rode the few mile to Deadwood, a wonderful place full of history then we spent a few days tuoring the Black hills areas with some of the most spectacular scenery and riding to be found anywhere. If we had trailered, we would not have had the chance to meet all of the friendly and intesting locals and especially the other bikers on every road and stop along the way.
