As far as rides go, I'm pretty booked for 2006, but would be interested in Sturgis in 2007 if there was a bunch going.

I've been there enough times that it is not real high on my list of places to go, but if there is going to be a good group of Forum members there, I would go just to meet people and for the ride up.

Art,

You'll have to bring a guitar so we can do a little 'grass.

Regards,

Bill

My wife won't ride either Art, and she sure as hell won't camp out. It's the one week where our son is away at camp and I'd love to share this experience with her, but I'm tempted to do it alone. She would like it once there, but not sure how to get her there and still get to ride.

One other option is the RV, you can rent one in Seattle for about $1000 a week. This would off-set the hotel prices and still give you more than enough comfort to not call it camping. Plus you can get a home cooked meal, or a cold beer from the fridge that didn't cost $5 once in awhile. Renting a motorhome is really cheaper than owning one if you only use it once or twice a year. and if you get 2 couples to go in on it it is really a good deal.

You might still be able to get in places for 2006. Sometimes they make a list in case they have cancellations. Our friends learned a lesson to stay out of downtown Sturgis area to stay.. Way too loud when you finally want to catch some shut eye.

Again, we stayed at Holy Smoke Resort in Keystone. She has cabins that she rents. You can get single ones or doubles. Doubles are 2 bedrooms connected by a bathroom and foyer area. They all have heat and air conditioning. (Heat??? in Aug? Oh yeah, one night it was in the low 30's a couple of years ago.) If you want I can find the phone # for you and see what your chances are this year. I know the owner is not around right now. You'll probably have to wait until Jan. to call. I have pictures of the cabins too if you're really interested.

Any of the places in the surrounding area aren't that far. You figure you're going to ride to everything anyway. Deadwood, Hill City, Lead, Hot Springs, Rapid City they're all fine.

O.k....I am going to admit this here - I am just not a camping type of person. Raised a citygirl, was camping once in Cape Code in 1973. Never had an opportunity since to go camping and don't think a ride to Sturgis from Washington State is the time to start camping. So, to all those who have been to Sturgis - suggestions for places to stay that are not campgrounds would be appreciated. And don't get me wrong - doing need a fancydancy place to stay - my needs are simple - but I do need a bed to sleep on instead of the ground and a hot shower.

Thinking I had better start making reservations for 07!

thanks for the insight into the Holy Smoke - after your post I went online and found the place you were talking about - looks nice! Will check it out. Next up - a trustworthy housesitter for three indoor only cats and a doggie camp for two dogs for that length of time.
