My 03 Fatboy front Chrome wheel (I switched the stock rims at original purchase) has begun to flake at each dimple. I intend to take it to the dealer, but want to gather some information first. The bike is garaged and maintained properly. Is four years a reasonable time for a chrome finish to last? Thanks (I posted this on the Wheel section, but I think this gets more traffic).
I have relatives that were in the chrome business. Take my word for it.....if chrome starts to "flake" the surface on the metal wasn't prepared properly (read: oil remained), or else the chrome wasn't acceptable the first time and another layer was applied.
Either way, the answer to your question is CHROME SHOULD NEVER PEEL UNLESS DAMAGED. Call H-D corporate and complain. You're probably not going to get anything from the dealer since the warranty is up and the dealer will have to eat it out of their own pocket. H-D should want to see this wheel anyway, as it is definitely a defective part that was supplied to them by one of their suppliers.
Just got back from Lighthouse HD Dealership, here on Long Island. They said they were very sorry that the Chrome was flaking off. They immediately removed the wheel, gave me a temporary one, so they could have the original one repaired. And if you believe any of this, I got a bridge for sale. Wheels aren't covered on the extended warranty either (luckily I have that too). The reply was "The rims are 5 years old, what did you expect. No one will warranty something for ever." I guess I'll write to Main Office, though I'm fairly certain that to will be a waste of time.
Take it to the stealer & they will say "Finishes arent covered under HDs warranty" Same thing happened to my exhaust tips! They look awful so i had to drop $120 to get two new fishtails

Man what a load of crap...You should have said " yeah right..If the chrome started peeling off your 2002 cadillac bumper or whatever you drive, you'd be screamin like a banshee "

And your Caddy dealer will say the same thing as the Harley dealer/the Ford dealer/ the Chevy dealer/the Mercedes dealer...
OOPS !! Sorry, NOT COVERED...
