Default Comfort question

I am getting my first ever bike in a little over a month, and being on a Navy budget I am electing to go with the Sportster, I just have a quick question and I know ultimatly I will be testing both flavors out on my own for the final decision but I was wondering on the comfort difference between the 883 and 883L. I plan on doing some serious riding as in lots of road trips and such and was curious about what others have to say about the distance comfort of the two models.

Thanks in advance.

Beer,
I have little familiarity with the sportsters, but I reply because I understand you plan on touring and longer rides. I ride an '06 Deluxe, a rather heavy bike. Friends of mine on sportsters often comment that they can ride their sportsters any distance, but that obviously it will not have the comforts of a heavier machine. Is the reason for the choice of sportster based only on price? Have you considered some of the bigger'06 models that have yet to be sold? I think you might find a good deal on an 06 and thus have one of the last of the good engines [imo], but in any event, a heavier machine for your longer riding. Maybe you can get a new '06 for just a little more than an '08 sportster. Good luck anyway.

If you are looking to 'tour'.....save another year and get a more suited bike.
I had an 883Custom......with saddlebags and windscreen. I rode it several
hundred miles at a time......I think the longest ride was 300 miles.
I could have rode it further, but that was what the trip was. It got me there and back,
but there are far more bikes that tour better.
Then sit down and figure 2 beers a day X 30 days X12 monthes. If you drink in a bar add a buck or two tip every time. How much is that? You can have a Softail at least!

Im in the Navy too, As a single E-5 I was able to afford a new Fatboy. I dont know your personal situation or anything like that, and if your finances dont allow you to buy a new bike that is a good touring base. You can find a decent used bike with very little miles for pretty cheap. You could get a softail or even a Road King or Street glide for 10-12 grand that is only a few years old that probably has less than 5k miles on it. That way it will probably have a bunch of chrome goodies on it, Stage 1 already done and you wont have to pay anything for it. Take a look at craigs list and cycle trader. Where are you stationed at anyway?

I ride an 05 1200 C. I agree that for long haul riding the Sportster is probably the least comfortable in the stable but it's all a matter of: comfortable as comparedto what?? I flew from Tucson to Cookeville, Tn. a year and a half ago to pick up my bike (bought it on eBay) and it was 1700 miles bringing it home. I had two days of 10 hours each (appx 500 miles each of those two days) and I loved every minute of it. Factor in the fact that I'm now 73 and you'll see that it wasn't too punishing. Would a Dyna, Softail or bagger been more comfortable? Yes. So is aBuick more comfortable than a Porsche but which one would you rather take on a trip????? Good luckin your choice.

It is like a car trip, the small compact car will take you anywhere you want to go but the Cadillac will get you there a whole lot more comfortably.

nothing wrong with a sportster,I got the base one because the Low looked so low it reminded me of my mini bikes seat height.
