I had orthroscopic surgery on my knee twice on the same knee in 2 years each time I was cutting the lawn the next day with the help of those wonderfull little percocets, the second day I was riding, stiff and sore the means was woth the end result...........on the road again!
Knee replacement is another ball game all together! You WILL be down for the count for a good while. If you go full force to rehab and suck it up you may be back in the saddle in6 weeks and that is pushin it!
had an auto graft (took the center of my patella ligament and replaced my acl and pcl with it) and gave me a cadaver meniscus to boot. knee surgeru sucks. bottom line. was riding pretty quick, after 2-3weeks. first week i was in bed, second week i finally got up, as soon as i could i was on the bike with the cane slung over my neck. wasn't right or completely good but , what are ya gonna do? ya gotta ride. in all honesty it sucked and i hated it. but i love to ride the bike. good news is 1 1/2 years later(after tearing my cadaver meniscus and having it repaired again) i can walk normally and am playing softball and snowboarding again. cool party.

FWIW: I carry one of these in my saddlebag all the time [just not for my knee]. Or in lew of a bag, you can stick it in your back pocket. Either is better than hangin' yourself with it. Think I got if for under $20 at Wally World.
My dad had a knee replaced. I seem to remember him being in bed for a spell on a machine. My aunt had one last year. Think she was back at it (working not riding) in 6 weeks. A little weak, a little sore, but better than when she went in.
Total Knee Replacement: One of my buddies had his replaced during this summer; he was back in the saddle in just over 5 weeks. Good Luck! Work hard during rehab to get your mobility (flexion/extension)back. You'll be riding again.
I work in rehab as a Licensed Physical Therapists Assistant. I have no doubt that you will be riding again if that is your goal and you work hard towards it. The timeframe involved is completely individualized. Make no mistake, Total Knee Arthroplasty is a BRUTAL surgery. Your speed of recovery is going to be controled by many factors, many of which you will have no control over. The main thing to keep in mind when considering your safety with riding after surgery is this...After your wounds are healed and the physician is satisfied that everything is stable, the nerves that used to exist on the ends of your bones that communicated with your brain to tell it what position your knee is in are now nonexistent. This is the main obstacle to long term control of the knee and your safety and function. The brain will eventually use other pathways of nerve signals to learn to control the knee, but this is a learned process. Make sure that you do your therapy and that, beyond range of motion and strengthening, your therapist puts you through a complete neuromuscular reeducation program.
I had total reconstruction...not replace...all the ligaments regrafted and cartaligde(sp.) scraped...i was off the wheels for almost 4 months....all because of the strength factor.....

My wife just had her ACL repaired 1 month ago. She got on my bike, with me, for the 1st time last Friday.... the Surgeon said she should be able to ride by herself in another 2 weeks. She's been working hard in rehab and at home getting her flexibility back and building up her muscles again.
Roses is right on! Replacement is aVERY diff. recovery than a repair. Our orthop. surgeons and particularly our therapists would very much want to know what your activities (riding a heavy bike, etc.) are and they can then best help you with recovery. Good luck!
