What would you pay for hand sewn soft style throw over leather saddle bags. NOT "assembly line" manufactured ... each one individually cut and HAND sewn (not even machine sewn). With a Lifetime guarantee on workmanship. Would you be willing to pay $250? More? All input greatly appreciated.
Oh. I forgot to mention .. these aren't for me. Hubby does leatherwork and has gotten good "reviews" on the bags he made and is running on his Night Train and we're trying to figure out pricing, taking into consideration of course the materials, PLUS his labor. He just got his hours cut by 2/3 on his second human services job and has had it. Trying to see if he could make some money doing something he loves doing. But want to get a feel for what people will be willing to pay for quality work, assuming of course it is the style they want.
He should make some bags, Saddlebags, tool bags, and fork bags etc. I think he should learn how to make leather chaps too. And make them available with a liner and outside pockets.
Had a friend that used to do leather work and buy whole cow hides for his stuff. Got Mexican dimes from a coin dealer so he could sew them on his leather too.
Make some business cards and attend rally's and put a vendor booth up and see how it goes.
He's going to have to git a old leather sewing machine or he will have tooo much time in it. I know where one sits now. Don't know if they will let it go or not.

He also might consider custom seats. I know a lot of folks like stitch and toolwork in their seats. Sorry to hear about the job deal. Hope he can do well at the side business.
One problem he'll run into is trying to make stuff for "friends". They want the highest quality but don't want to pay much. I know from experience, I build furniture. On my furniture pieces, I usually take twice the cost of the materials to cover my labor and wear on my tools. For example, if I'mmaking a piece of furnitureand material costs $200, I charge the cost of the materialplus $400 for my labor.
