If you're doing long commutes at high speeds, then IMO a 3/4 helmet with a face shield is more comfortable after you get used to it. Really reduces a lot of things like noise, and you don't have to wear doo-rags, goggles, or earplugs. You don't realize how much that kinda stuff bothers you until you don't have to deal with it any longer.
I have a HD carbon kevlar 1/2, but I like my Scorpion EXO-200 3/4 SOOO much better. Believe it or not, it's cooler than the 1/2, due to better venting. In terms of looks, I've had several comments from othe bikers about how they like the look...mine's matte black and I usually ride with a dark shield. Looks mean... []
I'd comment on the effectivness of a helmet at 100+ mph, but enough has been said on that.
Anyhoo the wife and I have been contemplating wearing DOT helmets full time lately. With all the crazies out there it is just getting worse all the time. I was looking around and trying to find a helmet that didn't make me look like this.
The only ones I have found to date are Scorpion and HJC. I am leaning towards the Scorpion because it is alot more comfortable. Just need to decide on a 1/2 or a 3/4.
Depending on whether you want a full face or a 3/4, HJC makes both in carbon fiber material that is so light you forget you have it on after a while. The full face (model AC-12 Carbon) is the same as the Harley FXRG but without the logos, and without the high price ($260 on eBay vs. $475), and the 3/4 is about $199, also on eBay.
I have both, wear the 3/4 on hot days in the summer and the full on long trips and/or cold or inclement weather. I have the dark shield on both, and also a clear shield for night on the full face.
I bought them here. Best price, super-reliable. I don't think you'll see the 3/4 on the site--it just came out. But if you email the guy he'll get it for you.
If looks are a concern, then I'm guessing that you don't want something too huge. Check out Daytona Helmets. I think their website is www.daytonahelmets.com I got the 3/4 shell one. It is the same size as my '76 Shoei; much smaller than any other DOT 3/4 I could find. Also, the price was right too at only $50. Here's a pic of it next to my vintage Shoei (the blue one) so you can get an idea of the size.
When I got my bike, it was told to me by my wife that I had to always wear a helemt. Well, that lasted almost a month. LOL We got matching 1/2 acc helmets. they don't look to bad on my head, either. Lately I have been wearing my helmet nearly everytime I get on my bike. I have two daughter's who follow me out to the garage and tell me to wear it, and you can't argue with them. LOL
Because I am getting use to it, and the weather is getting colder, I have been looking into a 3/4 helmet. I hate when my ears get cold, LOL. I came across a Nolan N-42, http://www.powersports4less.com/deta...T_ID=TR-395800 . Looks to be a nice helmet. What I like is it has a fold down tinted sheild, on top of the clear. That way, I wont have to mess with switching them out. Not really cheap, but do you really want a cheap helmet?
Just throwing my hat into the ring...aw jeeze to f'in early. If you like a cool helmet (temp. wise) and one that is used by LE try a Super Seer. They have many color schemes and can match your bike's color. The site is http://www.superseer.com/
Yup, pricey, yup it's your head. It takes a while to get them, they make them as they are ordered. I was leary of buying over the web but just go by the head measurement guide. Site says made for American heads. Wateva!
