I have a speedometer / odometer that is in kilometers. The scoot was built for Canada but it is back in the USA now. I've decided that I want to get it dialed in for me instead of on the fly calculations (.6 x kilometers) for converting. A minor problem is that I recently changed to a 6-speed transmission which really threw things off. How much of a big deal, and how much is it going to cost me, to have a certified HD speedometer put on my bike including having the thing read the proper accumulated MILEs on the odometer?
You can just plug in a mph for the kph and it will work fine. As to the 6 speed I don't know, HD can recalibrate but I bet it isn't cheap.
I would look on ebay for a used speedo ($100+) out of a 6 speed bike and live with the miles it has on it. Should fix the gearing problem.
Like I said if it bothers you, HD will recalibrate to your old odo reading for a small fee.
There are aftermarket speedo calibration devices. I think they stay on the bike. Harley speedo's aren't all that accurate anyway ... my 06 ultra is off (slow) by almost 5 MPH at highway speeds. Then again ... I already had the CERT when I picked it up, so maybe that's part of the problem.
I do know that there is a speedo calibration number that has a couple of settings, but I'm not sure what they do or how to change them.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about. http://www.chopperscycle.com/page/VTS/PROD/78-286/22211
