Funny you asked I just got my patch and my membership information. I don't know how active I will be but I will give a shot. I guess I will get a leather jacket now.

I dont know if this is the same everywhere, but i get a discount at the dealer on certain days of the month with my local hog membership.
Only 10% so its not a big deal, but then again membership is only $20.

I just got my card, so I might go to the meeting that happens to be tomorrow, but I have no idea what to expect.

I belong to both local and national. I wear the patches on my vest. The national gives you towing and rentals if you travel and offer insurance. The local has rides and we do a lot of charity work. A great bunch of people & a lot of fun.

Put your patch on a leather vest with laced sides (for loosening). That way you can put it over your leather jacket when needed.

My wife sowed it. Most alteration shops will do it for a fee. Our HOG chapter has a volunteer that does it for nothing.

To paraphrase an old movie scene, "Patches?...I don't need no stinking patches!" Or something like that, anyway. My leathers are clean and I imagine they will stay that'away.

Like most, I got the national membership with the bike. Renewal is now due. I doubt that I will send them any cash since I can't think of a single benefit that I have received from them over the last 12 months. Yeah, I know about the road-side assistance stuff, but that's also included in my insurance coverage. Why pay twice? Oh, yeah, "they" avocate for me, don't they? Right!

I was almost ready to sign up with the local chapter for no other reason than to be the recipiant of the 10% discount that members enjoyed at certain times of the month at the local dealership. (Yes, I'll admit it...my motive was selfish, wasn't it? I really wasn't interested in being a participant and helping to build a better organization! [:'(])

It was about that time that the owner of the dealership (whose $daddy$ bought the dealership for him just so he'd have something to do!) realized that some "freebooters" (like I intended to become) only used the chapter membership to get the discount. So, he enacted a new requirement that members would have to attend "X" amount of chapter functions and have a card punched at each function to document attendance in order to receive any discount. Of course, that development caused any membership intentions on my part to quickly fade away. (He also had a chapter member and the member's family kicked out of the chapter after the member opened his own independant motorcycle repair shop) Besides, from my distant observation and eyewitness accounts this local chapter spends too much time "organizing" and having meetings talking about nothing in particular than riding. I'd rather ride, myself, and preferably not in large groups under the direction of "Road Captains" were I don't know the skill level of the person either in front or behind me.

Sorry for the diatribe! It just rubs me wrong that the MOCO and local MOCO dealerships are seemingly so controlling of both the national organization and local chapters. If thats not the case in your area, and you enjoy your association with the group then that's great! Have fun!

I am a member of National and local HOG Chapters, although I am not real active in the local chapter.

I have a small HOG patch on my vest and all the yearly HOG pins for the past 12 years.

I enjoy some of the local stuff, and I go to some of the national events. We have a trip planned now to attend the National HOG Rally in Billings, Montana this year.

Regards,

Bill

Being a new rider, my National membership is free for one year ... I do plan on joining the local chapter(s) ... there are two in my area and I want to see what they are all about ... From what I've heard, there are a lot of charity rides, so that's just a bonus to go riding with a group. Being "new" I'm a bit nervous about group riding but am expecting some good advice in that area (follow 1 mile behind? ) ...

I'm also curious about the patches and will see how the other 'members' wear them ...

Our sponsoring Dealer "Smoky Moutain Harley-Davidson" has been extremely generous with our chapter. He just had a 20% off sale for us. He built us a club house on site we call "The Shed" -- From April-October he has free concerts on site every Saturday evening (open to the public) -- the dealer has a free Swine Ball with a band every Christmas for members in good standing. The chapter has more charity runs per year than I can type without finger cramps. The Ladies of Harley have even more of their own charity drives. In other words the organization is what you and your sponsoring dealer make of it

Being a member doesn't stop me from riding by myself or with others or, for that matter, riding in toy or charity runs.

You could try a small toy run for a start. That way you can keep your leather clean.
