Default Riding Courtesy

I've been riding for a couple months now and have a quick question. If you are out riding solo and a group of riders pulls up to you or passes you is it okay to join the crowd? Just curious because I was riding solo and two other riders pulled in front of me and fell in behind them. They never said anything or made any gestures. Are there any books/websites that discuss this?

Thanks

You might be a little careful doing that. I guess it would be the same as if you were to start walking with a group you didn't know. They may be with a club, or headed to a meet that you were not welcome at. They could even be heading out to join the local gay biker parade (sure sign is fingerless gloves). You never know bro.

I would say no it's not OK. You don't know them or what they were doing. I have had people do it to me when riding with others and I thought to myself WTF is this guy doing?

Depends - did they wave at you or scowl and flip you off? I'd also be very reluctant to invite myself into someone else's group, doubly so if they were wearing any kind of "colors."

One of the first times my wife rode with me after I bought my bike ,we were at a stop sign when about 100 bikes went by ,we pulled into the middle. When everybody started to slow down enough to ask what was up it turned out we were headed to a funeral. It was really hard not to laugh.

When they drove by they waved and since they passed me a two lane divided hwy and just got in their lane after they passed, I didn't stay with them for the sake of riding with them, once my turn came up I turned. Just curious...

I think was perfectly fine, and to put words in your mouth.................. You just fell in line as the third bike.

When other bikes come up on me, many times they ride staggered behind me as if we are a group. When I come up on other bikes I fall in line in the the rear, until an opportunity opens to go around, turn off, etc.

Just seems natural to me, especially on back roads, where you really have no choice. Just keep a comfortable distance. IMO

Probably not a big deal if they didn't have on colors and you were on a divided highway. Now if you started to follow them on some back roads and into a gas stop and to eat, then I'ld say you were pushing it. Just don't try and get in the middle of the group. Stay behind the sweep.
