Default Top end "rebuild" after 17.000 miles

For some time I have been complaining over a periodic LOUD ticking noise when starting from cold. Dealer has diagnoed this to be ONE defective hydralic lifter.

As I do not have adjustable rods - they had to take off the heads to get the lifters out

In there they found massive amounts of "wet" debree - blue seats on the exaust valves and a lot of "scars" on the valves caused by debree getting stuck there..

Well this is caused by the often before mentioned Oil Seals on late 05 / early 06 bikes. So dealer is now resealing the valves after cleaning up and installing the new Oil Seals

Thing is that my oil consumption have not been that high - about 1 qt every 2000 miles or so but even so it did NOT look nice in there

Good thing is that my cylinders and pistons looked great !

So ... if you have a early 06 bike still under warranty - do youself a favour... Push your dealer to install the new Oil Seals !

I'm no gearhead but that amount of oil use seems pretty high to me. I can go 5000 miles on my '03 without having to add hardly a drop.

I'm glad you got the problem fixed before it caused further damage to the engine.

Was it covered under warranty?

1 quart in 2000 miles is high oil consumption. My 06 was a December bike and has the new seals. No consumption at all. I believe that issue was a recall and dealers should fix it even out of warranty.

Yes - covered under Warranty !

In HD Servicebulletin on this issue HD says "It would not be unusual for a Twin Cam engine to use one quart of oil in 1500 miles" ... For that reasondealer didn't find it nescecary to change my oil seals in the first place... They only do it if your engine uses more that 1 qt in 1500 miles..

But in my case they found out by taking of the heads for the lifter-replacement

Was this a recall with affected VIN #'s or just a SB where the dealers can BS you until you're out of warranty and then offer to fix it for you. On your dime....... [:@]

The service bulletin only says "2005 and early production 2006 models".. I have undestood that bikes from around 12/05 should have the new seals - depending on model. As this problem is on ALL Twin-Cams it depends...Themanufactured date on your bike is notnesscecarily the manufactured date for your engine

Yeah, but the problem is if it's just a SB the dealer will jerk you around to avoid doing anything. Like the 1 quart every 1500 miles nonsense. If it werea recall by VIN they'd have to make the change. If I were to try and have the dealer replace my seals, I can gaurantee you they would throw up every line of BS they could think of to get out of doing it. Now of course once the bike is out of warranty they'd be the first to tell me I need to replace the seals. [:@]

My bike used to drink oil at around 1 quart/1500 miles and when I complained about it, I was told that HD said it's "normal". Coming from a wrenching background, I thought "there's no WAY that's 'normal'", but they wouldn't do anything under warranty. I knew about the valve seal issue, but they wouldn't budge. Well, after I got my heads done up by Head Quarters which included new, better valve seals, I've had to add a total of about 1/2 a quart over 10000 miles!!! Suuuuuuure, my stock valve seals were just fine...

I'm not pissed off at my dealer. They're handcuffed by what HD will allow under warranty, but I am cheesed at the MOCO. That kind of oil consumption is unacceptable, IMHO.

Cheers!

And if you think that is bad..............

Some of the EVO based Sportsters also had problems with valve seals, and I've heard stories of some owners being told that it wasn't unusual for engines to use up to one quart of oil every 900 to 1,000 miles...... [8D]

Amazing, and it's especially bad that some owners actual believe it when the dealer tells them something like that...
