Talked to Leo Brotherinlaw
Just got back from CA. My Brotherninlaw is a motor Leo in the Bay Area He is not riding mis HD they have had to much trouble with the 07s his just came back from the dealer shot the replacement engine just QUIT Making noise again.
They have been replacing the HDs with BMWs same i was told with San Rafael
They have to many problems
i've seen a bunch of bmw popo bikes on the road lately here in the bay area. city cops and highway patrol. really no surprise as the bmw is a pretty bad azz bike.
Seems to be going on all over the place. I know Eugene, OR switched from HD to BMW either 2 or 3 summers ago, can't seem to remember when I read that article. Supposedly they gave the city a real sweetheart deal on the maintenence or leasing terms. Don't know any of the details. Did have a LEO pull up beside me at a stoplight in Vegas and complain they he had to turn his HD in for something else a bout a year ago as well.
here in los angeles *hd got the bid cuz they agree to let the city doing all of the maintenance. bmw wanted all the bikes to go to bmw for servicing. school police and the sheriff's still have the beamer's.
With budget's shot to hell these days, departments have lots of reasons to give business to whoever gives them the best deal. It may not necessarily have anything to do with '07s. Most departments that are converting are likely to have an older stable of rides. Not many city departments are turning over bikes on a yearly basis--but I could be wrong. Maybe in sunnier, drier areas they are.
My 07 Ultra clatters like an old sewing machine. Took it back to the stealer andthey said it was normal. Sounds bad with your just cruising. Highway not a problem, but in town, geez! Only way to stop it is keep the rpm's real high.
Lansing Mi still has there HD's. One of the guys in our office is a retired Police Officer and he rode motors for quite a few years. He told me that they used to use HD's with sidecars back during WWII because of the gas shortages. They even used to transport prisoners going to jail in the sidecars.
I would think water cooled bikes would make more sense for the way they are used by LEOs....harleys have a better presence but HD leaning the motors out like they did can't be good for durability....just sayin
