Default Good News

Well for me anyway. the wife and I talked about our situdation, and now Im keeping the bike. When I get back from Iraq i really want to buckle down and get all the kinks worked out of it. Since I bought it last February, Ive had some problems. Some were mostly my fault, and others were HD's fault (deaership) When I get back, the warranty maybe up so Ill be spending some money. Its a 1998 Fatboy. When I got it I added 16" apes w/ S/S wires, rebuilt cv carb, alarm, and cruise arms. Not too much. My problems that ive had are the headlight flickers on and off when Im going down the road. Almost like a wire is loose. But then it went completely out, so i switched to brights and it quit. Is that just my headlight is bad and need a new one? Im still new to the harley scene. Where can I get a new headlight, and which brand is preferred?
Next, I had to get my starter warrantied before I left, when I got it home I noticed when I hit the turn signals, the alram would go off. Is that most likely just simple wiring?
Lastly, I need to get new brakes or pads, not sure. When I stop I here the front brake grind a bit and the back brake squeals like a pig. What brand is recommended? Sorry for all the dumb questions, Im trying to research all this stuff while im over here. Thanks for everything.

Hi, you say that you have a alarm. this could be the problem, a short in a wire or wrong conection. all brakes squeal , clean them and refit with the recomended grease.Test h ligt bulb.

First thing is first......for the headlight check the bulb....check for 12VDC at the HL plug.....check the switch......check the fuse......since you said you changed out the bars, a wire could have gotten pinched, and you may have even blown a fuse....(hopefully).

As for the alarm....well you need to go back and check that all the connections are clean and tight. Then check your battery to make !!)% sure that both the neg & posi wires are clean and tight at both terminals. If all that checks out then you need to test the "turn signal/alarm module"....but to do that you would first need a HD factory service manual. I am sure your problem would be found somewhere in there......the bar change keeps me thinking about a pinched wire though....when did all these problems start.....right after changing the bars...???

Since you will now have a HD factory service manual, you can check the trouble shooting section and look up the problem with your brakes. I could teach a 5 year old how to correctly replace a set of brake pads.....so I am very sure that armed with a service manual, you could do the job....and stop the squeek and have a new set of pads in all calipers in under a hour.
I just hope that the "grinding" noise you hear from the front is not metal on metal....messing up the rotor(s)....or you would need to replace it/them.

In any case....write back and let us know how you make out....or if you get stuck or need a bit of help along the way....post away, I am sure someone will be glad to help out.

Finnaly..........Thank you for serving our country at a very hard job.....and doing it very well!!!
