Just so you know Heli-Coils if done properly are stronger than the original threads in the material they are put in.

Ditto.
We used them in Arresting Gear and Catapults in the Navy.
And use them in the Power industry now.

Not sure if you will ever see more harsh environments.

+100 WVULTRA, these type of inserts are far mor dependable than Helicoils. They are also easier to use. I use them on production equipment and I require them on new equipment where fixturing/removable parts are installed.

These are the best. You just have to have plenty of wall thickness. They will not back out.McMaster Carr.

wideopen1967 I agree 100%. I believe that is what I said. MSI uses Jergens. Carr Lane is good also. The photos in the page do not show the product correctly. Look in Big Book Page #: it is in PDF.
You also have to enter Keylocking Thread Repair in the search box.

To get an idea how they work go [HERE]

I started using Carr Lane Keenserts while doing jig and fixture building back in '82. Have used them when possible in every thread repair since (finished off my machine shop career after 23 years ina repair environment).Be sure there is enough material available around it because the outside diameter of the insert is much larger than what is ona heli coil. The neat thing is you don't need any special taps to use them, just don't get spooked by the shallow thread depth for installation, use the tap drill size recommended on the manufacturer chart. Example: 5/16-24 insert has to be drilled 29/64 and tapped 1/2-13.Helicoils have their place in areas with thin walls like engine blocks around water jackets. They work but are subject to back out during disassembly.
