just bought my first Harley last year.2005 heritage.My question is if my bike is properly ridden and properly mainted by a Harley dealership how many miles could I expect to get out of the engine and transmission before having any major problems.I have asked several people and know one seems to know.Any one that has a opinion I would like to hear from.

Well I had 10,000 on my fatboy when the tranny went, I found out that the syn3 I was running in there was not a good oil to run in the tranny. I guess it is too thin of an oil, I now run bel-ray in the tranny of both bikes. However I have never had any engine probs though.

Thanks for the input.I have my bike serviced at Harley and they use syn fluid in it .I have met people that claim to have gotten 150 thousand miles out of thier harley.some people say 60 or70 thousand.I just wondering what to expect.Thanks again for your input

I always wondered about that Syn-3 in the tranny and primary... I did switch to it in the crankcase, but have stayed with the dino stuff in the tranny and primary. Too thin is exactly what I thought for the tranny anyway. Glad to hear some validation.

Had 45K on my last EVO without any engine problems at all, and I expect better out of the TC. But, any bike can have a substandard part out of the thousands that make up a bike and which one it is could certainly define the mileage before major fixes needed. Bad headlight is annoying. Bad crank pin is expensive...

Gary, you question involves many variables. I can give you this example though. We have a rider in our area who rides a white FLHT (now with sidecar) all over the country. At 140,000 mi the dealer, Gowanda H-D tore it down and found all parts to be good. This bike was always maintained by this dealer and only received usual maintenance. The MOCO asked for the motor back and gave him a new one. They wanted it for some reason. I'd like to point out one thing, this bike was back when FLHT's had chain drive and the chain is still hanging on the wall at the dealers, in good shape. This was also only one of his bikes, and each of the others were high mileage too.

edit: PS..I used to envy this guy. I thought I was a high mile rider, but he embaressed me. At the time I wasn't retired.

If the bike is regularly serviced and ridden and not beaten, you should have no problems with 100K without major problems. Check the cam tensioners periodiocally and use a gear oil like Mobil 1 75/90 or redline shockproof heavy in the trans ( A gear oil, not engine oil). A synthetic in the engine will help as far as it will tolerate more heat before breaking down giving you better protection, and the HD primary oil is fine in the primary.

Enjoy it, service the engine at around 2500-3000 miles with a filter and a quality synthetic oil .Do your maintenance on the forks and chassis as required also

A buddy of mine has a 95 wideglide with 160,000.+/- 5000. He is a year round rider short of snow and ice, he rides it like a crotch rocket. He changes the oil monthly, strong believer in the straight HD oil no synthetics. He's been through 3 clutches, brake pads annually, 4 final drive belts, but no major engine work. Not bad for an 80 incher.

50K on my 95 FXSTC. Never had a wrench on it other than basic routine service.

My engine longevity is an issue I really don't care about. It's well taken care of and maintained but if / when it blows up or something serious happens, I'll just put an S&S on it and ride on! Machines wear out and break because they're machines....

Had 89,000 miles on my '91 EVO when I sold it. Got 25,000 on my '03 Wide Glide. A fellow web biker in Illinois had 160,000 on his Ultra when a fluke failure caused the engine to go. Drive it well, keep it serviced and it will treat you good. Have fun!
