Safe Riding. ( What do you do ? )
This is what safety measures I take .
1st. My Sled. I installed those blink break lights. When I hit the breaks the back lights blink three times. then I installed a kit that let my turning signals be a stop light also. Then I installed LED red lights on my saddle bags. Harley sales them. They look like little spoilers. Then I put Harleys 50Wat lamps on my crash bars. Then I put a high powered lamp bulb 110/120 . Then I installed a system that lets my head light blink on and off in high or low beam. ( This has been the single one most help in getting people to notice me. ) . I wear a leather armored jacket . I also wear breathable leather gloves in the summer and heavier gloves in the winter. I have riding pants that are leather and have armor padding in the knees and hips.
2nd. I wear protective gear. A good full face helmet. Leathers or a Harley mesh
3rd. I try not to ride in high traffic hours like 7:AM or 12 noon or 4:30 PM. If I do, I get out of town fast. I plan my rides to be in the country if possible. I like the interstate because you don't have people pulling in front of you there.
4th. I'v found that traffic can be your friend. I stay beside or just in front of just behind a car while going through intersections. Cars are great for protection. I rarely ever ride in the outside lane. People can't see you as good there and it gives me more time to plan a way out. I always try to run the speed limit. I never trust anyone period. I have learned to drive agressive. Passive driving will get you ran over.
4th I choose roads less traveled. Country roads mostly. I also find riding in groups works well.
5th . Never trust people behind you. When at a red light always have a plan of excape. I watch my mirror. If someone looks like there going to fast. I get the hell out of the way.
6th. I NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE. NEVER.
7th. I'v found those little mirrors you can get at autozone are real good for checking for oncomming traffic if you want to get over. but nothing beats turning your head and looking.
8th.most seasoned bikers are good at seeing potential crash situations. Don't get involved in a pile of cars trying to run each other over to get by. Let them go. You will be amazed how quick things will clear up. Never speed. Take your time. You will get there in plenty of time.
9th. Always do a tire and break check before you pull out.
10th. this is one I do every month. I go find a place that is pretty well open and i practice quick stopping. You will be surprised how much you can learn from practicing. Try it at different speeds.
11th. If you can't avoid a collision. Try to stop as much as possible before the impact. DON'T LAY YOUR BIKE DOWN. Do a controlled stop and aim for the hood. You will go over the hood and have a much better chance of less injuries that way. Also your passenger will be safer. The average impact speed is 23 mph. Most motorcycle accidents happen in a 40mph speed zone. If you can bring it down to 10mph. then you've minimized your injuries.
12th. fingerless gloves are worthless in an accident. Here's the way I think about it. Imagine your going to run down the road on your hands. Now...go pick out a pair of gloves to do that with . leathers don't do much in the way of protecting body parts. It may stop some road rash, but today there's so many new advancements in safety gear, till leathers are becoming obsolete.
13th. I train my rider being my girlfriend what to do in the situation of a collision or heave breaking situation. We go practice together. Teach Her what to do in the case of impact.
I guess some Harley riders will think im crazy. but following these safety measures saved me from a tragic wreck more times than I can count.
then your ready to ride safely.
Be seen and heard I say. Create a safety cushion around yourself. Don't follow anyone too closely. Watch out.

Did the one hundred plus accident "victoms" (vs. victiems, victams and victims) seem bothered while you took notes of their after-crash reflections? 100% huh? Professional interviewer? Insurance adjuster? Cop? (nahh) Tremendously nosy hang-around??? What was your purpose all that time? Writing a book? Running for office? (Jeez, I KNOW I'm gonna regret asking)
