I keep it in first until the cage behind me stops, or there definately is none behind me. Never like to sit with the clutch in unless there's a definate reason. Carryover habit from the very old days when things weren't as reliable as now and there was more of a chance that some part of the clutch disengagement chain of parts would fail and launch me into the intersection. More chance of that happening back then than now. But remember, the "good old days" did not have soccer moms on cell phones in SUVs barreling up behind us.
hahahaha didnt even think about it till now.I,m old and learned on foot clutch, slip into neutral coasting up to light, stop put both feet down then [told ya im old ]put left up on shifter, hand on clutch look in mirror constantly, light changes or need to go, click ,gone.
If your gonna sit with it in gear, keep brake on firm, clutch cables still break and these new ones dont stall easy, and trucks and cars hurt.Been there done that,WASNT FUN
Usually clutch in, first gear. However, it depends on the light and how long I've been in the saddle. Sometimes I gotta stand up, stretch and relax my hands...
If I'm first at light, I don't really think it matters. Some knucklehead comes flying up behind you, you're in the intersection anyways. Maybe if you're in gear, and noone is coming (not in my geography of Chicago) you might be able to get out of a problem. If its a busy intersection and soccer cell phone mommy comes flying up, you're options are limited.
Now if I'm at least a car behind, I'm in gear ready for evasive action if need be. At least I have a car length to work with.

I am usually clutch in, first gear, watching mirrors like a ****, ready to move if need be. If I get two or three cars behind me and stopped and I know I have a little bit of a wait I will pop it into neutral. I watch every car out there like they are gonna kill me. I don't trust any of em'.
