I had the folks at www.phssaddlery.com make me custom chaps a little of a year ago, nice chaps, great quality, but I only wear them when it's 50F or lower.

Been down on 'em once, definitely saved me some skin.
During the summer, there just isn't much choice except to leave them off though. At 100F+, you will steam-cook yourself in leather.
Bought a pair of denim chaps with kevlar reenforcement in the knees at Bikefest in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. Good over shorts in the heat to save your skin. If you can handle the giggles from your family (I couldn't) they work well.
Used to wear them in the cold. Now I wear flannel lined jeans from LL Bean or my Gortex lined jeans from Cabellas. I think I stay warmer and don't have to deal with the extra load. Just my opinion.
