Default Belt drive?

Hello, first post. I am getting back into riding after being away for 20 years.I am looking at a 2000 Dyna at a dealer. Only 4000+ mi for a little over 9 grand. It's a belt drive instead of a chain. Does anybody remember the belt drive bikes?? Were there a lot of problems with them?

Thanks,

John

A belt should last 40 to 60k.

The current belt drive has proven to be very reliable, does not require lube, and after the initial break in period the belt tension is amazingly stable. The chain drive is easier to repair on the road if you have problems but given the choice I would go for the belt drive over the chain. Welcome to the Forum Old_Timer, You will find the tech forums loaded with information on Harley Davidson motorcycles and a very valuable asset.

You won't be doing wheelies with the belt drive, not like a chain, but It works well.
You do need to adjust it correctly if you take the tire off, unless you have that cam that adjusts distance itself.
That ought to be a nice bike. Check and see if there were any recalls on anything in that year and deal with it accordingly.

Do you remember chain drives?

Enjoy.

You'll like the belt drive. Very reliable and no more chain oil all over the back wheel.

I had the same worries when I first bought mine. Zero problems after 16000 kms, and have been assured by many here that I have many more problem free kms ahead of me.

All Harleys are belt drive
