Along these lines, I've heard metro areas are going too allow bikes to ride in the HOV lanes. This is probably old news, but I'm fishing to hit 300 posts today and move out of this "student driver" crap.
It means putting your life in jeapordy, hoping some cage don't pull out on ya when ya ride down the middle of them!!!!! It for sure isn't legal in Jersey and I don't think I would do it if it was!!!!
It is legal in Ca
I was told that the reason it is, was because most bikes are air cooled and need to keep moving, it has been legal in Ca sense 1977 that I know of... anytime before that, I would'nt know?
I ride in to San Francisco a few times a week (weather permitting id ride every day).
I have seen guys splitting in ultras no problem. Usually gives me a little more confidence on my 'smaller' bike.
I only split when traffic is stopped, not in a curve or banked situation, and when the bike is getting too hot. Its just not worth my life to save 10min.
It scares the crap outta me, but a lot of drivers move over a bit to help add space. Not sure if its fear for their paint, or courtesy though.
When I bought my bike, I told myself I'd never do it. Now it seems I do a little more every time.
You guys seem to be right about it not being referenced as illegal (which should mean it is legal).
I like the quick table format AMA gives to state laws...
Ya gotta be kiddin me! I have never heard of that...not to mention I wouldn't even try that. That's just nuts! I could see it if traffic is stopped completely and your bike is overheating and you have to get off the road...I have been in that situation and desperate. In my case, we were able to scooch down the shoulder to get onto an off ramp in one particular instance cause we were stuck in a traffic jam...That saved my life...I can tell you that for free. I think I was getting pretty close to heat exaustion at that point and my bike was ready to quit on me.
