Will someone explain to me, how this can be legal. Considering each vehicle has control of their lane and one tries to change lanes there are a number of factors involved to determine how it can be done and who has the right of way. In this case, when you've a car in each lane and a bike on the yellow line, how does one determine who has the right of way especially if they're involved in a mishap.

It has been said that this so called splitting traffic is legal. Is it REALLY legal or just tollerated (like j-walking is tolerated)

I split laned from north of L.A. to the south in rush hour traffic.. years ago before they enacted the lid law. must have been about 25 miles or so on my 84 FXRP. I even had the pleasure of passing a few CHiPS and boy scouts... none of them gave me any grief...

Just gotta say... it's one helluva rush!

I have seen a few bikers get hit lane splitting, to me it isn't worth it.
I just get in line like the rest of the cars, seems to be much safer.

I wouldn't want to live in a place that had that much traffic. I feel sorry for y'all that do.

its actually called lane sharing and you can't do it in 2 way traffic only one way like on the freeway or when there is an island between the 2 different directions 'only between cars, not on the extreme left or right

its much safer in between than waiting for the car behind you with a cellphone in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other to run your a$$ down

I agree. For those that have never heard of it, or wouldn't do it, etc it is very common in CA. In fact, I feel more vulnerable setting behind a stopped car than running between them. Got to keep your head on a swivel and give it 100% attention. You have to be very aware of what the other cars are doing. Regarding cars making lane changes into you, the best way to avoid that is watch for the gaps that may (or may not) allow a car to merge into and make sure at that point, you are next to another car. Most cars won't change lanes into the car next to them. When the gap is closed, proceed. Loud pipes help. High beam in the daytime helps. I go nuts sitting in traffic and for me, splitting lanes to the front at a traffic light or splitting lanes on our 4 lane parking lots is the benefit of having a motorcycle in Los Angeles. I can get across town in 15 minutes on a motorcycle and it might take 30+ minutes in a car plus the aggrivation. For those that don't feel comfortable with the idea, the answer is simple. Don't do it. We are all individuals, right?
Take care,
Dave

As far as I know, it is not legal here in AZ. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it anyway. I say stuff like that as an escape from a moron behind me not stopping.

lanesplitting isn't for everyone I've had times when I had to do it from south san francisco all the way home in san leandro 28 miles when I get home my hands hurt so bad I can hardly pull in the clutch but its still preferable to an suv enema

Let me splan something!...Its only done when traffic is Stopped! or very slow bumper to bumper...like 35 mph or slower maybe 40 mph and all size Bikes do it!

I just have no idea Why in the Hell they don't let Bikers ride in the emergency lane when traffic is Stopped or at like 15 mph so they can keep moving and stay out of harms way!

I understand that there should be a speed limit doing this! on the emergency lane thing like 25 mph max...would be a good thing!

It only makes sense to someone that has it!

Ride Safe!
