I guess my question wasn't understood.
How do you know a chunk of rubber in the road is from a retread and NOT from a new tire?
I know how to tell the difference, simple. But it seems most others call any chunk of rubber a retread.

Does anyone besides me know the difference?
The real question is, is there any difference between hitting a retread chunk and a new tire chunk?

While driving to work this morning in the cage I noticed a lot of retread chunks in the road about 12" long. This is an interstate and traffic is going 80 in the hammer lane and about 70 in the sissy lane. I got chills thinking about what I would do if I hit one of those on the scoot. Following the next car at say 5-car lengths I wonder if there would be enought reaction time time to miss one. Anybody ever hit one?
Well, kind of, sort of..Technically, it hit me. Iwas on a 2 lane and saw a p/upulling a dual axle trailer loaded with lawn equipment coming toward me with one of the rear wheeles flapping and smoking. I slowed down to about 40 and kept an eye on it. He got about 50 feet from me and the damn thing broke loose. About a 2 foot section along with a bunch of other pieces came flying off. The funny thing was the large piece slung way up in the air and the smaller debri shotoff and landed in front of me. I dodged all that crap only to see the large piece headed right for me. All I could do was stick up my left arm and deflect it. It hit my forearm and and slapped me on the helmut. I stayed up, and pulled over a bit down the road to look at the damage and clean out my shorts. A lot more had acually came off after it got by me and I could hear the cagers locking up brakes.. Ah yes, Road Gators.

So I guess it is acceptable to generalize anything. Such as;

If you ride a sport bike, your a total speed demon maniac.

If you ride a Harley, your a dirt bag and a drunk.

If you drive a cage, your a total idiot.

If your a blonde your, stupid.

Kind of annoying right?

So why do so many think all the chunks of rubber are retreads? Even call for a ban on retreads?

The fact is, that the vast majority of those chunks come from NEW TIRES, NOT RETREADS.

So, can we just refer to them as tire chunks, or alligators, or whatever instead of retreads?
