If Harley is so anally attentive about proper safety (meaning flip the kill switch first to keep your hands on the bars), then why the f&ck can my Fatboy be startedIN gear, WITHOUTthe clutch being pulled in for SAFETY!!!????????
I'll call partial BS. We all know the switch interrupts a circuit thru a relay to kill the motor. How the battery conditions power is beyond me. Its a power supply. I can remember bikes having kill switches before EFI and electronic ignition.

A battery is an excellent device for "conditioning" power.
Explanation #1 - The battery acts sorta like a big ol' pool of water with a stream entering from the source (alternator via voltage regulator), and another stream exiting various loads on the bike). While the entering stream can vary the amount of water it dumps into the pool, the outlet stream is sized so the amount of water it passes varies much less. When too much water flows into the pool, the level rises, but the outlet stream stays nearly the same. When too little water flows into the pool, the water already in the pool helps maintain the correct outlet stream volume.
Explanation #2 - The battery acts like an air tank (receiver) in a large compressed air system. When someone or something suddenly starts an air device up a larger amount of air is required. With no tank present the compressor discharge pressure drops considerably. With a correctly sized tank helping provide the suddenly needed air, the pressure drop is much less, effectively smoothing out the system's pressure variations.
There have been several articules hinting at speedo failures and electronics failing from using key switch to kill the bike instead of the kill switch. Also the articules stated that they recommended that the key be turned on and then the kill switch to start the bike. I normally turn the key on let ecm ramp up then turn on kill switch and listen to the fuel pump ramp up then hit the starter switch. I don't really know if it makes a difference but I will continue this till something smarter comes along.
The above statement is true, on my Lowrider last year the speedo wouldn'tregister above 35-40 even though I was running at 65-70 when I just used the key to start and bypassed the kill switch. When I stopped for awhile and restarted the bike turning on key first then kill switch the speedo worked just fine. Kind of strange but it is just one of those things you have to do.
If I'm parking the bike uphill or anytime I want to leave it in gear as a parking brake, I use the kill switch to remind me that the bike is in gear. Otherwise, I just use the "ignition switch". I have done it this way for the past 40 years, no problema.[8D]
This is exactly what I do. Now i never forget to turn the ignition off and I never forget the bike is in gear when parked on an incline.

Good point. Cause it ain't got no safety limit switch on it,, it should have one,,, same as the kick stand,,, forget to kick it up and the bike will start,,, first turn to the left might take you down if it doesn't fold up.

LOL, no safety switches needed - helps weed out the ones who should be walkin'!
