MSF protocol is also to hit the kill switch before turning off the ignition.

I remember those!!!! You have to reach down and yank the spark plug wires off.

On my new Street Glide I use the Off/Run switch to shut down the bike then turn off the ignition. If I wanted to kill the bike, I'd use my S&W and a hollowpoint.

So it becomes habit. When you go down or are the way down you will flip it off rather than try to reach for the key.
They have been teaching that in safety course as long as I can remember
Smitty's answer is correct, but consider this, everytime you open and close a switch under a substantial amount of DC current, you apply wear to that switch due to the intensity of DC power. I don't use my "off/run" switch because of this fact. That's one less contact to fail when I'm in the middle of nowhere and have another 1000 miles to get home.
The above is why I always run with just one spark plug. I pull the other oneout to reduce the chances ofa piston failure by 50%, alternating cylindersevery 100 miles tokeep the wear even.Plus, with only one plug firing it doesn't tax my electrical systemas much and the headlight is brighter. Kinda makes myleft legsmell like gasoline though...

.... but if I leave the key switch on it woun't work
Well, ummm...yeah, ofcourse it runs things down when you leave the key in. No one is suggesting you leave the key in after you shut off the bike.

If your way works for you then fine, like you said, why change now.

I asked the service manager of my local HD when I bought my ultra this very question. He said " Hitting the kill switch first, shuts down the fuel pump, thus starving the engine for fuel and bleeding down the pressure in the fuel lines after the fuel pump"
Sound good..... not sure if it's correct though.
