Default Kill switch then key?

Why is it recommended that the kill switch be used first to kill the engine then turn off the key?

My guess is because it is up on the handle bar,,,but that is just a guess.

There's no specific reason to do it in this order. However, doing it this way, allows you to keep your hands on the handle bar, and thus the brake. Also, this "habit" would keep you from letting go of the clutch, thus preventing an accidental launch of the bike.

With a Dyna, it's probably safer to kill the engine first with the kill switch before leaning over the bike to reach the key on the neck of the frame while balancing the bike with one hand on the handlebar.

Here's my routine.

Stop the bike.
Put it in neutral.
Hit the kill switch.
Put down the jiffy stand.
Get off the bike.
Turn the key and remove it.

Wow. For 30 years I just assumed the kill switch was for emergencies while still in motion. And using the key always kept me from walking away with the key still on. [sm=dontgetit.gif]

The ignition switch "switches" less current if you first shutoff the engine with the kill switch.

There have been several articules hinting at speedo failures and electronics failing from using key switch to kill the bike instead of the kill switch. Also the articules stated that they recommended that the key be turned on and then the kill switch to start the bike. I normally turn the key on let ecm ramp up then turn on kill switch and listen to the fuel pump ramp up then hit the starter switch. I don't really know if it makes a difference but I will continue this till something smarter comes along.

Okay. I'm not an electrician so please let me know why this is good. I don't mind changing habits if theres a good reason.

Okay, now that makes sense. None of my bikes ever had any electronics except for lights.
