Default RE: HD Intercom ?

I took the plunge last year at Mytle Beach.
I bought a couple of the J&M shorty antannas for my ultra.
The J&M vender also had their headsets on display.
I tried them out and thought they sounded much better than stock headsets.
The display was a full helmet, so it was much like wearing headphones.
The sound system that was playing the sample tunes was special made I'm sure,
because I have never been able to duplicate the quality that I heard at the J&M vender that day.
My wife & I have a half helmets with zip on/off earcovers that also cover part ofthe neck.
I get better quality sound with the ear covers zipped on that when it,s removed.
Much to do with road sound, wind anda looser fit.
I find the lower cover to be a bit confining, but works well in the cold and or rain.
But, the bottom line is J&M is better.

If you want a H-D stock headset, I've got two that I no longer use.
Make an offer.

In the meantime, I'll try to remember what I payed for the extra H-D headset.
and what bI payed for the J&M headsets.

I have 2 of the HD headsets and the sound is fine. I used an Autocom brand intercom system on my Softail. Something that the Autocom directions say, but the HD's doesn't, is that you need to get the speakers as close to your ears as possible. You also need to make sure the speaker is centered with your ear canal. If you don't do this, the sound is crappy. Autocom even sells litte foam shims to get the speakers closer to your ears. Just remember back to the old walkman headsets that slipped over your head. If they weren't right on your ears, they sounded like sh*t.

Wife and I use HD headsets all of the time for intercom and tunes. Never had a problem with the HD and we have rode a lot of miles using them.

I just looked up the H-D stock headset
and my cost of the J&M headsets at Mytle Beach Bike Week event:

Premium Stereo Helmet Headset - '98-later Models

Harley experience and KossÂŽ sound quality collaborate to
provide superior performance with improved microphone
and speakers for use with 1998-later stereo system.
Microphone clamp can be installed on the left side of
an open- or full-face helmet. Thin, injection-molded
speaker housings include soft fabric covering.
77147-98

Fits '98-later FLHTCU/I models and '98-'02 FLTR models
equipped with Intercom/CB Radio Kit P/N 76331-98.
(Does not retrofit earlier models.)

MSRP US $189.95
Chicago H-D dealership gives a 20% discount

The J&M headset that's compatible
My cost at MB Bike weeklast year
J&M # HS-BCD277-KHH Headset $152.99
J&M # HC-PR 98-05 Harley 7-Pin $20.69
$173.86

I bought 2 of each
so the cost was at the Event was $347.36
plus sales Tax$20.84
Total$368.20

The J&M Catolog prices are a little more than the Event prices

But, J&M cost me slighty less than H-D Headsets
I still think the J&Mhave better sound quality than H-D Headsets

Was wondering how well the helmet audio you get with a purchase of an Ultra works for most of you all? The p/n is 77147-98. Been debating on wether to get another for mama or to go with the J&M setup? If I can get by with just buying another headset instead of 2 I will be mucho happy. But if the HD headset is crap I would rather spend the big bucks on a J&M intergrated setup. So please, lemme hear your experiences with this headset! Thanks!

The wife and I use the Harley headsets and they seem to work fine for us. You just have to play with the VOX setting to get it just right, but when I finally got it adjusted right, they work fine.
