What is a stage 1 kit? or a re-map mean? Sorry im kinda new to HD's and ran across these when mentioning someone wanting to put on new or slip on pipes. heck I thought all you had to do was put on the pipes and go. Am i missing something?

A stage 1 kit costs about $170 and opens the intake. It requires a remap of your computer to mix the fuel correctly, otherwise you will be running way to lean and will burn up your engine. The remap is what the dealer does to reset your on board computer to control your injectors, (I'm presuming you have EFI). If your going to put on new mufflers, you might want to do it at the same time as the stage 1 so you only have to map once. It will cost about $150 for the map if you do the hardware installs yourself. Both the mufflers and the stage 1 are dirt simple to install. You can do the mufflers at home then ride to the dealer and put the stage 1 on in the parking lot then wheel it in to the service bay.
You'll notice the increased pull when you get the bike back.

Harley upgrades are rated by stage I, stage II, stage III. Stage I includes several bolt on items but whether you do it all or just one thing like pipes, you're still in stage I. Stage I is pipes, open air cleaner, tuner, larger displacement such as 103" or 110". Stage II is cams. Stage III is head work. I'm going by memory of what I've read about these mods, may be off some.

I agree, the only other thing I would add is maybe thinking about a race tuner if you are going to keep changing setups. Not pushing a brand but I use the screaming eagle race tuner for one of my bikes. It allows me to tweak it with a lap top. There are several good tuners out there.

There many more and for the most part, better upgrades available for new HD's from aftermarket sources. The so-called, "race tuner" from HD's screamin' eagle offering is more than adequate but in typical HD fashion is "married" to the bike it is purchased for. This means that if you buy a new bike you can't remove this very expensive add-on and install it on your next bike. Every other upgrade out there is transferrable from bike-to-bike. In my mind, this makes HD's race tuner not an option. Look into V&H FuelPaks, RevTech DFOs or DynoJet's PowerCommander III USB. Much better options at a much better price. Way too many new buyers fall victim to the propaganda that HD's performance upgrades are somehow the best out there. Ray
