I always thought too much old Honda Shadow rubbed off on the FXR. I know they handle great but the frame has that 80's metric look about it.

FL799, Probably the othr way around, the FXR chassis was introduced in the early eighties with the Shovel Head motor in it.

the fxr i had was a 81&half sturgis with 80 shovel it was a nice bike dont get me wrong ever since 71 when they brought out the first superglide i've been crazy about them . then a friend had a 80 superglide with the shovel and built to the max that would blow your mind . but remember there has only been a few harleys that has not had any flaws some very little and some not so little but since the early days they gotten alot better.when i had my shovel i bought used and the guy i got it from did'nt take real good care of it and i had to put a few bucks in it .but fxr or dyna i really like that style of bike .

I'll admit I don't know a lot about the history of Harley models ,but was the Superglide and Low rider a FXR before they became Dynas or were they something else ? Just asking cause I know Dyna's came out around 1991 and the 06 Superglide is a 35th anniversary, and I know a guy who has a 1978 Harley he says is a Low rider .

05FXD,

The first Superglide was a '71 model, basicly an FLH Electra Glide with Sprortster forks and a "Boat Tail" rear end.
The Low Rider was introduced in 1977 and was another Superglide model,
Both models were FL chassis and were carried over as FXR models in the early eighties. The FL models went "rubber" with the FLT in 1980 and the last of the old FL frames were used in 1984 as special models, "Electra Glide Sport"
The rest of the Electra/Tour/Road/GLides and Kings are basicly the same today as that first 1980 FLT Tour Glide. The frame was modified in '96 to lower the seat but that's about it.

The FXRis probably closer related to an FLHthan a Dyna; notice both use the shorter primary, both rubber mount, ect..I had a 93 FXR and was bar none the best bike I ever owned. SS, Andrews, Python II.s, it was fast as hell and handled great.Sure wish I still had that bike. I heard one reason they quit making them was the engine/primary/trans had to be assembled together inside the frame at York and couldnt be shipped as a unit like all the other bikes. Dont know if thats true but makes sense. Anyway, some folks didnt like them but usually all they saw were FXR taillights anyway.

Of all the bikes I have owned since 1966, my '91 FXRS-Con was by far my favorite bike.

Of all the bikes I have sold since 1966, the only one I regret selling is the '91 FXRS-Con.

Once I learned to check the water level in the battery before every long trip, and to check that stupid plug in the front of the engine, the FXRS-Con was "bullet proof."

But what do I know? I only had that bike for 10 years and only rode it coast-to-coast, Canada, Mexico, etc., etc.

BTW, I have owned 5 other Harleys, the current one is a '06 Ultra. If I could trade the '06 Ultra for my '91FXRS-Con (and get it back exactly like it was when Isold it), I would!

And I thought it was neat that when I sold the '91 FXRS-Con in 2000 - I got more money for it than I paid for it when I bought it new............

BTW, in 1999, my wife rode my FXRS-Con and really liked it.Shegot a '99 FXD. The FXR was by far smoother running and better handling.

JMHO!

My wife has a 83 shadow. I let her ride one of my FXR's (92). She's crazy about it. Can't wait to head to town and show off. Best handling Harley's I've ever had. That's why I own two of them.
But some people just can't tell the difference between an FXR and a Dyna.
