Default RE: FXR vs. DYNA

Well, this is an old thread, but I thought I'd correct a couple of things. The FXR line never had a Sturgis model. The original Sturgis (FXSB) was made for a few years starting in 1980 on the 4 speed frame, and it came back for one year in 91 on the first Dyna.
And I disagree that the current driveline would make an FXR better. The Evolution engine gets much better fuel mileage, runs cooler and responds to modifacations better, partly because it already has good flowing heads and a gear driven cam; items that the twin cams lack.
As for the frame looking "metric", the FXR always had the classic Harley "look", with the teardrop tank curving back smoothly into the seat, which, even though thick and comfortable, continues the curve before reversing it, forming the signature HD reclining chair seating position, which the metric bikes were unable to duplicate for many years. The first Dyna frame is far closer to the metrics; the initial Dynas had a seat that protruded straight back from the back of the gas tank. Harley had to replace the tubular frame rails under the seat with sheetmetal to lower the seat height, and they went to a less cushioned seat to try to recapture that Harley "look" (I won't even get into the weakness of the frame, which caused many a primary to crack). None of it worked until they made substantial changes to the frame with the 2006 models, which finally have the right stuff., looks-wise at least.

ORIGINAL: lakebum

......although you are right about it being the predecessor to the Dyna.
That's the reason. As different as they are, the two bikes are much more similar to each other in configuration, handling and "purpose" than either is to any other Harley family. Close enough that even the MOCO lumps them together.

Umm, even Harley groups them together for convenience, not because they are the same bike.
