I actually have to wear 2 different brands at the same time, Acu-vu Advance Hydraclear and Coopervision Vertex Toric ( due to astigmantism in one eye) I use Opti-Free Replenish as my lense cleaner. I can't tell the difference between the two lenses when wearing them and can go upto 18 hrs without ever needing to rewet them. Some people are just less tolerant of wearing contacts then others. One thing to consider is how much wind is hitting your eyes when you ride, the more air the quicker your contacts are going to dry out,.

Frequently when we do initial fits and refits for patients to optimize comfort, I like to do the old "Pepsi Challange". After determining fitting parameters (prescription, corneal curvature, corneal diameter, tear film specifics, prior history, etc) I'll most often send the patient out with two or three different brands of lenses that I KNOW will physically fit well.

But fit isn't everything and by providing two or three different brands (materials, water content, stiffness, etc, etc) the patient usually finds one that is MORE COMFORTABLE than the others (more hours wearing time without discomfort, less dry). Patient is instructed to try each brand several days in a row, then switch but to come back to the office wearing the lens they feel is most comfortable.

We then check the physiology of the lens against the eye tissue, movement, surface deposits, vision and fine tune theprescription and rule out any problems caused by the lens. You'd be amazed how poorly informed patients are by most eye care professionals about the risks their ill-informed wearing habits can cause. After all, I'm in business because of problems people have, and the problems are most often caused by poor patient habits, nor poor fits.

Hey, we're all not bullet proof and wearing lenses up to the point that they are UNCOMFORTABLE and having that be the reason you're switching to the next pair of disposables can eventually make you CL intolerant and unable to wear any lens successfully in the future. C'mon, do you really rewear your underwear until they're so dirty you can feel them and then change (well maybe some of you...). Hey! This is your EYES we're talking about here!

Oh, BTW Acuvue Oasys is currently our most sucessfully fitted lens, but there are 15-20% that do better with some other brand ... so the Pepsi Challange it will be!

Ride Safe!

just jones-ing for some decent weather here in the Northeast. Can't wait to do some pic's of the Winter modsto share.

My "solution" was lasers.

Had the surgery 7 1/2 years ago now and it's one of the best things I've ever done.

Another vote for Aquify solution. I've tried 'em all, and always end up going back to Aquify. It has a nice slippery (for lack of a better term) feel to it. Other solutions I've used don't have that nice slick feeling on the lenses...they feel harsher and cause my lenses to fold over when I apply the solution. BTW, I've been wearing O2 Optix for the past 2 years, and like 'em just fine. Although, I may try the AcuVue Oasys next time around.

hi cotton, are you wearing a helmet or goggles or what? do your contacts bother you at other times or just while riding?

I wear goggles most of the time and a fullface helmet sometimes. I ride a RG so I don't have a lot of wind. No problems any other time.

I wear Biomedics 55 lenses . .the Cadillac of contacts supposedly. They are fine as long as the wind doesn't dry them out.

I use the Ciba Vision "Dailies" and have never had a problem. I do frequent highway driving from Mass to Maine and they never dry out - of course I have on sunglasses.

Hi again cotton, I'm guessing your lenses are drying out while you're riding. I've got biomedics55 too (didn't know they were cadillacs though ). These are 55% water and are probably extended wear but I take them out at night. I haven't hada problem riding with them.I use sunglasses and a full face helmet when I ride.On the other hand, last week I was skiing with ski goggles on and they got pretty dry and uncomfortable so it doesnt take that much wind blast. The cold dry air probably didn't help either. You might want to try different goggles, or talk to your eye doc about lenses with a higher water content. I don't know much more then that on the topic.

ABSOFRIGGINLUTELY !!!!!!!!!!!

I bet I spent $30,000 over 40 years on glasses and contacts. I had regular glasses, sunglasses, shooting glasses with 3 or more different lenses, and new everything every few years. I tried hard contacts, gas permeable, soft, daily wear, extended wear, and throw away. I had corneal damage twice and several slight infections. I fell asleep and blinked my contacts out twice or more. Couldn't see straight for days.

A local Opthamologist in Dearborn, MI, Dr. Stan Grandon, did about 30,000 RK operations after travelling to the USSR back in the day with a Professor from Wayne State University. He also taught at the Kresge Eye Institute. A few of my co-workers had RK done by him but they reported varying levels of both pain and success. I made an appointment in 2001 just to explore the possibilities and had an exam. The Doc told me that while RK was covered by my insurance and has excellent visual results, it was somewhat painful, and he liked his LASIK results almost as well, and there was no pain. There were a few decisions to be made but it was all very easy and straightforward.

I had the operation. It took 20 minutes. One night of recovery and virtually no pain ! I drove to his office alone in the rain the next day for the follow up exam. NO GLASSES ! Mine was expensive at $2700 but it was cheap compared to what I spent on contacts and glasses. My vision is almost perfect. Good enought to pass the driving test and my company physical. For perfect vision I could get a touch up in one eye but I'm satisfied. Make that THRILLED ! Get LASIK. You won't be sorry and I wouldn't steer you wrong. Take a loan out if you need to...Tom
