I never done a road trip before just rides that average 200 miles give or take 50.
But a few items I've heard to take is: a map, tools, 1qt oil, spare set of plugs and a bottle of water.
If'n ya have one I suppose a cell phone.[:'(]

Taken from the HOG MEMBERS ONLY site:

Below is a long list of potentially packable items, grouped into several different categories. Items that might be considered "essential" are marked with an asterisk. Consider this list a starting point – a "virtual" pile on the floor. Then remove (or add) items according to your own needs and limitations. Lightweight synthetic clothing – such as T-shirts and underwear – can be washed in a hotel sink and dried overnight on a shower rod or towel rack (cotton fabrics take too long to dry in this manner).

Zipper-lock plastic bags of various sizes can be extremely useful for organizing items in saddlebags and duffle bags. They can make it easier to find and retrieve particular items without unpacking your entire motorcycle. Use the one-gallon size to pack one day's worth of clothes – jeans, undergarments, and shirt. This makes it easier to unpack ju

What Mikey said above is a great start point IMHO. I would sugesst putting almost everything in plastic bags zip locks for small items trash bags for lager items. One good rain storm and all your gear is wet is a quick way to end your great trip. Plan out where your staying and have a good picture in your mind how far each day to go. Of cousre allow for some "Free time". Have a great ride.

I've taken quite a few long trips riding two up on an FXD with only smallish saddlebags and an overnight bag on the luggage rack. There ain't no way I could pack all the stuff HOG has on their list! I coppied the list below and added comments indicating what I try to pack and what I can do without. I also carry a few items not on the list, like a small tent and two sleeping bags. I try not to carry anything I know I can pick up cheap if I need it, like asprins, bug sting stick, oil, light bulbs.... I road two up 1,100 miles each way to Sturgis and had everything I needed for camping during the ride there and back. To make things more comfortable for the week I was in Sturgis, I UPS'd a larger tent, camp chairs, air mattres... to the campground. When I came home, I UPS'd it all back to my home.

Clothing
* Helmet - only if I'll be riding through a state requiring one
* Rain jacket and pants - I never carry any rain gear. Been wet a few times and spent a little time under bridges though
* Rain gloves - Nope

Leather pants - Nope
Riding boots
Leather or denim vest - Nope
Bandanas – two
(one for face; one for neck or forehead)
Sunglasses
Goggles/night eye protection

Cooling neck wrap (such as Kool Tie) - Nope
Windbreaker or light jacket - Isn't this already listed above?

Bike Maintenance
* Tool kit

Credit card and cell phone. Pack "only" what you think you need. Anything else can be bought on the road!

I will be faced with the same thing in less than two months. Two of us are riding from Virginia to Texas April 2nd, I will be getting with my brother-in-law in a few weeks to go over our list, I think part of the trip will include a couple of nights camping, so a tent and bag will also be required. If we split up on the stuff we take it will all fit. Have a great ride, I can't wait!!!!

I won't miss a day of running, so I always take my running shoes. Since I wear riding boots the running shoes double as something I can slip on to go get a paper or get ice.

My wife and I never leave home without our coffee pot and insulated coffee cups. If we are camping and will not have electricity, we take a small butane backpacking stove and pan for heating water and have instant coffee.

My opinion is that the HOG list is too extensive. If I packed all that on my bike and my camping kit, short of Granny and the rocking chair, I'd look like Jed Clampett heading to Beverly, Hills that is, swimming pools, movie stars.

"Take only what you need to survive!" Sorry, bad reference to Space *****. I am glad this thread started. I am planning on a couple of short trips and needed ideas of what to bring.
