When traveling I rarely cover unless the weather dictates it. Last year we ran out and bought trash bags to cover the seat when it rained. Some Other bikers were laughing until they were trying ot dry thier seats while we just pulled of the plastic
I'll be buying a cover for work...looks like probably a "Quick Shade"...That is to stop daily sun damage on the fairingwhile parked at work(The California sun can killor discolor about anything).
We try to park in good light outside the room or infront of the registration. Of course it's not always available so we just park [&:]
Haven't been on any long trips yet where I'd have to leave it out overnight, but I DO have a cover here at the office to protect it while it sits in the parking lot all day.
I got one primarily to keep the bird doo off. However, I notice that people tend to not be quiet so "nosey" when the bike is covered. I actually found someone trying to sit on the bike one day last summer before I got the cover. I think that having to deal with the cover makes people tend not to mess with things that don't belong to them.
I use a cover if i am camping, like to keep it dry if i can. We often leave early if we are on a trip. Also keeps it much cleaner. It's cheap so I dont care if it gets packed wet. I also think that it may deter people that want to mess with things.
Absolutely always covered.... I work away from home 10+ months a year and stay in motels... I even cover it when I'm home, no garage.... It may not stop a determined thief but it removes the temptation for the rest...
