Default helmet issues

Another helmet issue to me is vibration. It could be just me but, when i wear my half shell, I get some pretty significant head vibration due to wind. I'm about 5'9" and have an Ultra with a 9" shield. At about 45-50 the wind shake will give me a headache after about an hour. Feels like my brains are getting scrambled at times vision is even bothered. Much more comfortable with the full face. Could be I'm just a sissy...nahhh!

No problem so far with the half helmet, and I'm doing 55-60 mph without windshield. It should fit snuggly on your head.

Hey 13zero6,

I'm with the other guys, might be a size too large. Should be snug. If there is room for air to get between you and the lining you can believe it will get in there and create some turbulence.

Suggestion: Try wearing the same helmet with a knit cap (beanie?) under the helmet to take up the gap and see if you get the same brain rattling results.

Heck, if you can wear a knit cap and the helmet then the helmet is probably too big already.

That's my $.02. Bill to follow.

I agree with the others, it does sound like an improperly fitting helmet. If it turns out not to be the case, then you are probably suffering from wind buffeting. Changing the height of the windshield may eliminate the problem.

I started off with a shoei RF-1000 full face, wind noise & helmet buffeting was so bad behind the fairing I switched out to a shorter windsheild(9 1/2" from a 12" stock height),lower fairing air deflectors, fork baffle, rode with helmet sheild open and removed from the helmet. didnt help,so i switched over to a D.O.T. approved half helmet buffeting/wind noise 95% gone now.

Two of my helmets do the same thing. They all fit correctly. I have not played with windshield size yet but I can say my Nolan 3/4 helmet (I think it is a N42) does not vibrate. It has this rear spoiler thing/shape. Nice helmet too. It has a flip down sun shade.

Put back the stock 12" wind shield and that should stop that problem. Your head is getting rammed with more wind and your helmet is probably not fitted properly. Follow this link to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s (MSF) WEB site. Read page 3 of the “What You Should Know About Motorcycle Helmets.” http://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/helmet_CSI.pdf It explains how to fit a helmet to your head and how to test for a proper fit.

Once the helmet is on your head, make a few other fit checks before
fastening the straps.
¡ The cheek pads should touch your cheeks without pressing
uncomfortably.
¡ There should be no gaps between your temples and the brow pads.
¡ If the helmet has a neck roll, it shouldn't push the helmet away
from the back of your neck.
¡ On full-face helmets, press on the chin piece. The helmet or face
shield should not touch your nose or chin. If it does, it will surely
do so at speed from wind pressure.

With the helmet still on and the straps securely fastened, move it from
side to side and up and down with your hands. If it fits right, your skin
should move as the helmet is moved. You should feel as if a slight,
even pressure is being exerted all over your head.Remember, too, that
a helmet loosens up a bit as the comfort liner compresses through
use. A new helmet should be as tight as you can comfortably wear it.
Now, with the chin strap still securely fastened and your head straight,
try rolling the helmet forward off your head. You shouldn't be able to
pull it off. If you can, the helmet is too big.
Take off the helmet. Does your head feel sore anywhere? Are there
any red spots on your forehead? Pressure points can be uncomfortable
and can cause a headache after a long ride, so be sure your
helmet isn't causing any. If it is, choose the next largest size or try a
different brand of helmet. Human heads are not all the same shape,
neither are helmets.
If you are still unsure about the helmet's fit, wear it around the store
for a while to see if it remains comfortable. A helmet is an important
investment, no matter what its price. Be sure the one you choose is
right for you.
