Went by the dealers last week to get my 1000mile (1600km) service out of the way - total cost $253.00 taxes in. Anyway, while I was there, I decided to buy some chrome accessories and other dodads for the heritage classic. Also got the service manual which cost me 79, and the chrome covered oil filter which ran 19.00. Manual for by triumph bonneville cost me 130. last year from the triumph dealer. Oil filter for the triumph ran me 16.oo and it is a tiny plain filter. Manual for my yamaha ran me close to a 100, and the small oil filter cost 13.80.
The quality of the chrome stuff from Harley looked real good.
I was going to be ordering a studded rear leather bib from Mustang - would have cost me 35.00 plus shipping, and maybe duty and brokerage fees. Harley ordered it for me at a cost of 38.00. I don't have to worry about shipping etc. No complaint with that markup at all.
So although some people find the Harley prices over the top, they are not that bad when compared to the British or Japanese parts prices.
Just an additional point - The Montreal dealer has been selling new Harleys like crazy. Must have been at least 30 or 40 on the floor marked sold - and they were going to be uncrating another 30 last Thursday. I think the sales problems in the States have nothing to do with Harley, but are due to the weak economy, recession, and mortgage crisis. Neighbours just got back from Florida, and they tell me that the deals on houses down there are incredible.
RE: Actually, Harley parts prices are not that bad.
About the selling bikes............My local dealer had ...I'd say 30 or so used bikes on the floor about 3 weeks ago. This week it looked almost bare except for a row of 4 sporties, 2 fatboys, and some dynas
RE: Actually, Harley parts prices are not that bad.
Went by HD world shop in OKC 3 weeks ago and it didn't look like no recession to me. I'll bet I was there 30 minutes and watched over 100 grand walk out the door.
RE: Actually, Harley parts prices are not that bad.
Same where I am. New and used bikes are flying out the door. BTW on parts and accessories prices, have you ever seen the prices on the metric stuff? It would make a Harley dealer blush.
RE: Actually, Harley parts prices are not that bad.
In my experience H-D stuff is of good quality and the prices are reasonable on most items. Some I think are a bit too high but all in all not bad compared with other brands.
for my BMW M3 - wheels $6 -8k a set, plus new tires. - uh, no.
I like my domestics. I do not think the prices are too awful high, but I sure won't let the hammer mechanics work on it for $100/hr. To me that is the real crime.
