Road my 07 Ultra home from work just a bit ago. Everything was normal. Pulled into the driveway and shut her off to open the gate.
Started it to pull it in the back and the starter made that god awful clunk which I have heard a time or two. I started ok but now I have a high pitched whine/squeal which sounds like it is coming from the lower left side of engine (Chaincase area?)
The sound corresponds with the speed of the engine, rev it it goes faster. Seems to make the sound in gear or neutral.
Get an automatic gate opener and never shut your bike off again. That was your mistake.
OK, j/k and I'm no Harley mechanic. Sounds like maybe a stuck solenoid though. Did you try starting it and shutting it off a few times to see if it ever stopped that?
Similar problem on my 05 FLHT. Noise was rather loud though.
Pulled the outer primary to find a sleeve bushing, where the starter's bendex gear shaft engages during
start up was worn. I assumed the bushing's wear was not allowing the bendex gear to fully disengage
after starting. Bought a new bushing from HD for $2.50 or so and replaced it. Haven't had any more issues.
Man, it was a god awful noise though, and not sure if this really matches your description.
