If you have a black engine and you just want to make it look black again i would use a product called Pig Spit. Just spray it on and go. You will have to wipe the overspray on the chrome goodies but it works well.

simple green and a garden hose. On rare occassions, S100 and a pressure washer but that's rare. My rides are usually bug covered and filthy...

For those tight spots that have some grease or oil stains, I like to use brake cleaner (NOT BRAKE FLUID!) ane the wife's toothbrush. \\; Engine sparkels, but the wife's teeth are turning a little blackish. \\; Not a bad trade-off.
