My $.02.........if i was not a helmet wearer in 1976 I would not be typing this reply. I wear my helmet to bed at night
Same story, different year. In 1991 my helmet saved my life.

A lot of head injuries happen on the concrete at lower speeds. It only takes a moderate bump. In my opinion, that's where you need the protection, because of the problems encountered with town traffic.

I am the opposite of the other's here. The only time my windshield is on is when it is raining. I cant stand it, it distort's everything and glare's back and to me it is more of a hazard than a help. It orignally was right at my line of site so I cut it down 2" or so, it is a little better now but I still dont like it. As for the helmet, that is your chioce, I would recomend it till you get more miles under your belt. If I had the choice I would not wear one, but that is a decision you have to make.

If you're a novice better stick with the lid,I rode for years without a windshield including a couple trips to Sturgis from the West coast.
I wouldn't be without one on a long trip anymore.

First time you have a dragonfly or a little bird hit you at 70, you'll put it back on, trust me.[:@]

Plus the windshield helps with fatigue. The wind isn't pushing you back all the time. I got a Memphis Shades Bladerunner, which is swept back and looks sporty versus the old "cop bike" look. Of course, it's not detachable, but I always leave it on anyways!

For short rides in warm weather I loose the windshield. I'd rather wash my face than the windshield. On warm nights its good to have a scarf over your face. I wish we had a helmet law. Then I would wear one. If your new at riding you are supposed to wear one for the first year, at least here in Ohio.

Bill, I don't know what the law is in Arizona but in a few states you must wear a helmet until you have at least one years experience riding. As far as speed being a determining factor as to when to put on a helmet that's not a good idea. You're probably better off having it on when riding around town due to all the crazy cagers and IMHO a helmet isn't really going to help you much at speeds over 70mph, except a full face shield will keep some bugs off your face. I really don't care about the bugs hitting my face and jacket that is part of riding to me, yes small birds and large insects do sting when they hit but I like to think they hit me to keep me awake, so I don't wear a helmet( unless state law) nor do I have a windshield. These are my opinions and are not meant to try and persuade you one way or another. You ride the way you feel the most comfortable and don't let anyone pressure you into anything else.
