I almost changed lanes into a biker yesterday while driving. \\; I made the mistake of checking my mirrors only and he was in my blind spot. \\; Luckily, I turned to look as I was making the lane change and was able to stop before even crossing the lane marker, but I got a honk from the guy (deservedly so too).
I always watch for bikes and focus on the road vs. being on a cell phone, but this proves to me mistakes can happen and we are hard to notice sometimes.
Hopefully the confession will restore a little riding karma my way.
Yeah - whilst I've not done that on my scoot, I have to confess I have missed seeing a bike a couple of times in my cage, but fortunately without causing too many problems for them. \\; Easy done - just had to make an embarresed \\;wave and acknowledgemnet of my transgression! \\; Like you say hopefully owning up will have some sway with the Karma fairy!
How many of us have out outside mirrors (on your cage) adjusted so we can easily see the side of your vehicle??? I used to till I got a tip from a fellow rider. Adjust the mirrors further out so you dont see any of the side of your own vehicle unless you move your head sideways a touch. This way you can eliminate a good part of the blind spot.
It happens to us all.My solution to the blind spot has been a panaramic view mirror.Can actually see out of the drivers window looking in the rear view.
Thing is, if that had been a car, I'd have forgotten about the incident by the time I got home. \\; The fact it was a bike had me mad at myself for hours...thus the confession. \\; Time to get it out of my system.
Hey, I'm STILL shaken from doing something similar a year ago. \\; Two interstates merged, lanes came in from my left, and suddenly there was a bike from nowhere right next to my window! \\; He rode up in my blind spot during the merge, but was the ONLY other vehicle in the area (rather empty road) so I didn't bother to look real close or check my blind spot. \\;
 \\;
 \\;A little different incident than the blind spot, but I did almost run up on a bike while driving my Tahoe. It was a black bike (imagine that) guy was wearing all black, late in the afternoon. He was stopped a decent distance behind a dump truck, that was black. I swear it was like camaflouge, I did not see this guy untill I was right on him.
 \\;
 \\; Good thing is I was allready slowing so I stopped in plenty of time. But it freaked me completly out.
 \\;
 \\; We get pissed at cages all the time, I have had my share of incidents, and I raged ect. ect., but the fact of the matter is, bikes are sometimes hard to see.
 \\;
 \\; Ride aware and alert. Be safe.
